It's yet another example of the sneaky business model of film stu- dio The Asylum: find out what blockbusters are going into pro- duction and slap together a looka- like for release at the same time. "Atlantic Rim"/"From the Sea" was released three days before the much bigger (and, frankly, better) "Pacific Rim" in July 2013. The Atlantic-versus-Pacific title trickery is pretty bad, but it's not even the worst shenanigan The Asylum has pulled. That award goes to "Snakes on a Train" (2006), released direct to video three days before the cult hit "Snakes on a Plane." The model is clearly working, since they've been doing it so long. And they still are. Indeed, they released 15 mov- ies last year alone, all following this rough pattern — films includ- ing "Top Gunner: Danger Zone" and "Thor: God of Thunder." The Asylum's most recent proj- ect is "Attack of the Meth Gator" (2023), designed to borrow some of the buzz caused by this year's "Cocaine Bear." Q: Is Tom Welling still work- ing? He seemed poised for real stardom once upon a time. A: He may not be saving the world as Superman anymore (though never say never), but Tom Welling is still busy. He came to our attention as young Clark Kent in "Smallville," the Superman origin series that de- buted on CW (then WB) in 2001, launching that network's universe of DC Comics shows. Since the show ended in 2011, he's struggled to find anything nearly as big. Welling's biggest role since has been a full-season arc on Fox's "Lucifer" in 2017-18. He also starred in the short-lived international action series "Profes- sionals," opposite Brendan Fraser ("The Mummy," 1999), who was going through his own career downturn at the time. However, Welling might not ac- tually be done with the Superman role after all. He reprised it once al- ready, in a 2019 episode of "Bat- woman," one of the other CW shows in the DC Comics universe.
