June 11 - 17, 2023 • Terre Haute Tribune-Star • 9 Many celebrities have images so strong, those endure after the people in question are no longer with us. Raquel Welch is a recent example. Legendary for her "bombshell' physical appearance that became internationally popular as her fame skyrocketed in the 1960s, the actress died in February at her Los Angeles home at age 82. Likely not a surprise to fans of the channel, Turner Classic Movies — which also has paid homage to such talents as Gina Lollobrigida, Ray Liotta and Ned Beatty soon after their passings — will offer a tribute to Welch with a double feature of her films Sunday, June 11. First up is "The Three Musketeers," an all- star 1973 rendering of the legendary Alexandre Dumas story that allowed Welch to display a comedic bent typically absent from her work up to then, earning her a Golden Globe Award. She plays Constance, a royal dressmaker who becomes the true love of Musketeer wannabe D'Artagnan (Michael York) and incorporates pratfalls into her efforts to support her beau. The Richard Lester-directed project also features Richard Chamberlain, Oliver Reed, Charlton Heston, Faye Dunaway and Christo- pher Lee. (The 1974 sequel, "The Four Muske- teers," was filmed concurrently.) Concluding TCM's Welch double bill is the movie that arguably did more to define her to the public than any other: "One Million Years B.C.," the 1966 adventure that proved Welch in a two- piece bikini could upstage (well, almost) battling prehistoric creatures designed by stop-motion-an- imation icon Ray Harryhausen. The poster of her that resulted from the film was a top seller, and it remained a big part of her legend, even as she strived for versatility in her career. To a very big extent, Welch succeeded in attaining that variety. Early on, she played it serious and brainy as one of the miniaturized scientists in "Fantastic Voyage" (1966), and while she did her share of Westerns, she turned nicely contemporary in such projects as the roller-derby saga "Kansas City Bomber" (1972) and the mystery "The Last of Sheila" (1973). The movie screen wasn't the only host for Welch's talents, though. She also made a number of television films and several series (including "Central Park West" and "Ameri- can Family"), and she had Broadway runs in "Woman of the Year" — being asked back for a six-month engagement after an initial two- week stint — and "Victor/Victoria." Welch also had a nightclub act that she performed in Las Vegas, among other cities. There only was one Raquel Welch ... and the many fans she attracted over the course of her work are sure to appreciate TCM's acknowl- edgement that, as she maintained and empha- sized consistently, she was more than her looks. Her talent, and her diversity, bore that out. spotlight BY JAY BOBBIN Raquel Welch in "Bandolero!"
