POWELL CF Media michael@cfmedia.info Several Shelby city officials, staff members, and other inter- ested individuals came out on Monday, May 22 to the 11:30 a.m. grand reopening of the Shelby Aquatics Center. The SAC is located at 850 West Sumter St., at Shelby City Park. Once things got started, Mayor Stan Anthony wel- comed everyone, saying he was pleased to see so many turn out to view the newly reno- vated facility and pool area. City Councilman Charles Web- ber gave the invocation, ask- ing God's blessing on the work and the endeavors by all who contributed to the renovation project. Parks and Recreation Direc- tor, Mr. Charlie Holtzclaw, who has been with the City for 43 years, gave a brief project over- view, also thanking those who gave of their time and talents to see the job done and done well. According to a small hand- out, the Shelby Aquatics Cen- ter "…opened in June of 1996." It is noted for being, as per the handout, "…one of the pre- mier swimming facilities in the South." The huge pool is a 10-lane, Olympic-size pool and "…has a rim flow system without gutters, (an) automatically maintained chemical system, a Colorado Timing System, a three-meter diving board and a one-meter board over the deep end." Holtzclaw also noted, from the flier, a teaching and training pool was also completed "for small children and (for) teach- ing swim lessons." Additionally, it was noted on the flier and handout there is a covered picnic pavilion, a full kitchen/concession area, and a bathhouse, all of which are part of the pool area. Said Holtzclaw, quoting from the prepared flier, "Each year thousands of people use this facility, which is open to the public from Memorial Day weekend until Labor Day weekend." Additional reno- vation project in- formation is as follows: Architect – CHA Consulting; Contractor – Sos- saman Construc- tion; (the Project began in Septem- ber 2022; (has) 20,000 square feet of concrete (sur- rounding the pool); (has) 44,000 gal- lons of water in the training pool; (has) 660,000 gallons of water in the Olym- pic pool; (includes) new one- and three- meter diving tower s; new coping stones and tiles in the pools; new roof shingles and gutters on the pool building; new restroom fix- tures; new filtration control panels; plumbing and electrical upgrades; and new flooring and counters in the bath house. City of Shelby Public Informa- tion Officer, Chip Nuhrah, noted the 27-year-old pool was losing as much as a million gallons of water a month. "There were many cracks in it and it was wearing out.
