10 ENTERTAINMENT EXTRA By Raye Smith TV Media WHAT'S NEW ON NETFLIX "The Mother" (2023) Never get between a mother and her kids, especially this one: Netflix's newest action thriller flick, "The Mother," premieres on the streamer Friday, May 12. Jen- nifer Lopez ("Shotgun Wedding," 2022) stars as the film's titular mother, a deadly assassin who gave up her daughter, Zoe (Lucy Paez, "The Exorcism of Carmen Farias," 2021), years before for her own protection. Now, with her daughter's life — and her own — in grave danger, she embarks on an action-packed, globe-spanning journey to keep her safe from a group of dangerous men from her old life. From director Niki Caro ("McFarland, USA," 2015), "The Mother" features a screenplay by Misha Green ("Lovecraft Coun- try"), Andrea Berloff ("Straight Outta Compton," 2015) and Peter Craig ("Top Gun: Maverick," 2022). The film also stars Joesph Fiennes ("Shakespeare in Love," 1998), Paul Raci ("Sound of Metal," 2019), Gael Garcia Bernal ("Mozart in the Jungle") and Omari Hardwick ("Power"). WHAT'S NEW ON DISNEY+ "The Muppets Mayhem" Rock on with the Muppets on Disney+ once again when the new 10-episode family comedy series, "The Muppets Mayhem," premieres Wednesday, May 10. After decades of rocking success and world tours, The Electric Mayhem Band has ac- complished everything they could hope for — except for releasing their own album. Now, the band — including Dr. Teeth (Bill Barretta, "The Muppets," 2011) on vocals and keyboards, Animal (Eric Jacobson, "Sesame Street") on drums, Sgt. Floyd Pepper (Matt Vogel, "Sesame Street") on vocals and bass, Janice (David Rudman, "Muppets Most Wanted," 2014) on vocals and lead guitar, Zoot (David Goelz, "Fraggle Rock") on saxophone and Lips (Peter Linz, "Bear in the Big Blue House") on trumpet — is embarking on an epic, music-filled journey to record their very first studio album. With the help of Nora (Lilly Singh, "Bad Moms," 2016), a driven young music executive, the old school Muppet band learns how to navigate the world of modern music as they bring their hit sound to the people at home. Based on characters cre- ated by Jim Henson ("The Muppet Show"), "The Muppets Mayhem" is created by Barretta, Adam F. Goldberg ("The Goldbergs") and Jeff Yorkes ("The Return of Return of the Jedi: 30 Years and Counting," 2013) and directed by Matt Sohn ("The Office") and Robert Cohen ("Somebody Somewhere"). Tahj Mowry ("Smart Guy"), Anders Holm ("Workaholics") and Saara Chaudry ("Holly Hobbie") also star. WHAT'S NEW ON HULU "The Great" - Season 3 The critically acclaimed, semi- historical comedy-drama series "The Great" returns to Hulu with its third season Friday, May 12, and this time the royal couple is making it work (sort of). A loose, comedic retelling of the story of 18th-century Russian Monarch Catherine the Great, por- trayed by Elle Fanning ("Super 8," 2011), the series follows the young Catherine's life from rural outsider to Russia's longest-reigning female ruler and her marriage to Emperor Peter III (Nicholas Hoult, "Renfield," 2023). This season, as Catherine and Peter attempt to make their marriage work after enduring a series of seem- ingly insurmountable problems, Catherine starts making a name for herself across international borders, and Peter busies himself with father- ing, hunting and culinary adventures. While Peter grapples with his own perceived failures as a leader — per- sonified by his late father, Peter the Great, played by Jason Isaacs ("Op- eration Mincemeat," 2021) — Cath- erine learns that sometimes even great leaders need to compromise to make progress. Created, written and executive produced by Tony McNa- mara ("The Favourite," 2018), "The Great" also stars Phoebe Fox ("Eye in the Sky," 2015), Adam Godley ("The Umbrella Academy"), Gwilym Lee ("Bohemian Rhapsody," 2018), Charity Wakefield ("A Midsummer Night's Dream," 2017), Douglas Hodge ("Lost in Space"), Sacha Dha- wan ("Iron Fist"), Bayo Gbadamosi ("War of the Worlds") and Belinda Bromilow ("Doctor Doctor"). "Class of '09" Keep your friends close: the new limited thriller series from FX, "Class of '09," premieres on Hulu Wednesday, May 10. Spanning multiple decades and told through interweaving timelines, the series follows a group of FBI agents — all of whom graduated from the same class at Quantico in 2009 — as they come together once more following the death of one of their own. As the U.S. criminal justice system is altered by artificial intel- ligence, "Class of '09" looks at special agents Tayo (Brian Tyree Henry, "Atlanta"), one of the most unorthodox agents to ever join the bureau; Poet (Kate Mara, "The Martian," 2015), one of the most successful undercover agents of all time; Hour (Sepideh Moafi, "The Deuce"), a socially awkward but brilliant data specialist; and Lennix (Brian J. Smith, "Sense8"), an old money insider with power- ful connections, as they learn that the situation they find themselves in is not as straightforward as they would have hoped as "the series examines the nature of justice, humanity and the choices we make that ultimately define our lives and legacy" (per FX). From creator and writer Tom Rob Smith ("American Crime Story"), "Class of '09" is directed by Joe Robert Cole ("Black Panther," 2018), Ste- ven Canals ("Pose"), Sunu Gonera ("Snowfall") and Amanda Mar- salis ("Ozark"). Jon Jon Briones ("Ratched"), Brooke Smith ("The Silence of the Lambs," 1991), Jake McDorman ("The Right Stuff") and Rosalind Eleazar ("Slow Horses") also star. WHAT'S NEW ON APPLE TV+ "City on Fire" Get to the bottom of a fiery mystery with the new Apple TV+ series "City on Fire," based on the acclaimed novel of the same name by Garth Risk Hallberg, when it debuts its first three episodes Friday, May 12. The remainder of the series' eight episodes air weekly on Fridays. On July 4, 2003, NYU student Samatha (Chase Sui Wonders, "Bodies Bodies Bodies," 2022) is shot dead in Cen- tral Park. Alone, with no witnesses and with very little physical evidence left behind, her case proves to be a tough investigation. While her friend Charlie (Wyatt Oleff, "I Am Not Okay With This") is struggling to cope with the death of his father on 9/11 two years earlier, Samantha's death sets him off on a mission to figure out what happened to her, no matter the cost. As the mystery surrounding her death deepens, Samantha is revealed to be the crucial connection between a series of mysterious, citywide fires, New York's downtown music scene and a wealthy, uptown real estate family. From writers and showrunners Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, both of "Nancy Drew" and "The Runaways," "City on Fire" is directed by Jesse Peretz ("Girls"), Liz Garbus ("What Happened, Miss Simone?," 2015) and Haifaa Al-Mansour ("Mayfair Witches"). Jemima Kirke ("Conversations With Friends"), Nico Tortorella ("Younger"), Ashley Zukerman ("Succession"), Xavier Clyde ("5 South," 2020), Max Milner ("The Dirt," 2019), Alexandra Doke ("Grey's Anatomy") and John Cam- eron Mitchell ("The Good Fight") round out the ensemble cast.
