18 ENTERTAINMENT EXTRA Royal Center Locker Plant 1 x 9" By Michelle Rose TV Media O ur collective obsession and endless fascination with food continues to change the way it is presented on televi- sion. We've seen the focus shift away somewhat from step-by- step, how-to cooking shows, to arrive at the more story- driven food docuseries found on many streamers. Shows such as "Chef's Table" are famous for mesmerizing cine- matography that keeps our interest while also presenting a more "big picture" view of the foods we eat — from sto- ries about the people and places behind the ingredients and recipes to the culinary art- ists who have prepared and perfected it. Of course, National Geographic is synonymous with cinematic documentaries that tell powerful stories, and this week, the channel is pre- miering a new food-focused docuseries that travels far and wide to bring you new food stories. Premiering Tuesday, March 21, the aptly titled "Restaurants at the End of the World" is an invitation to travel the world in the company of chef/entrepre- neur Kristen Kish, who is on a televised quest to discover the people and traditions behind the world's most remote restau- rants. Here's the official series description from National Geographic: "Running any suc- cessful venture takes a certain tenacity and grit, but those who set up deep in the wild, cut off from the grid and normal sup- ply lines, are in a class all their own. From local purveyors, farmers and herders to kitchen crew, managers and chefs, Kristen is going behind the scenes to meet the people, hear the stories and see the day-to- day balancing act required to keep food on the table in the most remote outposts on earth." In the first episode, Kish heads to Panama, where she learns the secrets of trek-to- table cuisine at Hacienda Mamecillo, and later helps pre- pare a meal for Rolando Chamorro, Panama's top chef. Other stops include Norway, Brazil and Maine. If you've watched previous seasons of "Top Chef" (spoiler ahead if you haven't), you know Kish as the winner of Season 10. The author of "Kristen Kish Cooking" also co- hosted Netflix's "Iron Chef: Quest for an Iron Legend" and served as the host of Travel Channel's "36 Hours" and TruTV's "Fast Foodies," so she's no stranger to the kinds of culi- nary adventures and human- interest stories that ignite the viewers' curiosity — and that's what you can expect from "Restaurants at the End of the World." The new series premieres Tuesday, March 21, on National Geographic and will likely land on Disney+ later this year. A world apart: Nat Geo treks to remote restaurants Kristen Kish (center) in "Restaurants at the End of the World" Babylon While transporting an elephant to Los Angeles in 1926, Mexican im- migrant Manuel "Manny" Torres (Calva) finds himself at a wild, de- baucherous party held at a Kino- scope Studios executive's palatial estate. Manny finds himself capti- vated by Nellie LaRoy (Robbie), an up-and-coming actress, and be- friends waning movie star Jack Conrad (Pitt), who helps Manny secure jobs that allow him to climb the studio system's ranks. Manny quickly gets caught up in the deca- dence and outrageous excess of the Hollywood scene, in a time when studios are transitioning from silent to sound films. Director: Damien Chazelle.
