Barstow St., P.O. Box 7, Waukesha, WI 53187 HARTLAND – You are what you eat. And the same goes for your pet. Every calorie you put into your dog or cat's mouth is healing nourishment. Veterinarian Chris Bessent, believes strongly in this age old adage. Certified in traditional Chinese veterinary medicine, Bessent regularly performs acupuncture and chiropractic services for her large and small animal clients. Her herbal supplement company Herbsmith Inc., located in Hartland, distributes all around the world. But in addition to prescribing herbs or performing chiropractic, a good diet is the basis of health. 262-542-2500 Hours: M-F 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. If you have a news tip from the Lake Country area, contact Amber Gramza at 513-2661 or agramza@conleynet.com To advertise in "Lake Country This Month," call the advertising department at (262) 513-2624. One of the other basic philosophies is that pets either have a hot or cool energy that needs to be cooled or warmed to reach the "gentle simmering" desirable temperature, Bessent said. For example, energetic or "hot" dogs require cooling foods such as duck, rabbit fish, vegetables and fruit. For pets that need a bit more energy, warming foods such as turkey or chicken, beans, sweet potatoes and cinnamon are a good boost to spice up the lazier pets. Bessent stressed, however, that it is important to know whether your dog is actually getting these quality nutrients it needs. Cats are naturally carnivores, and dogs are scavenger carnivores, so their original diets subsisted heavily upon meats and any vegetables and fruits they may have found while hunting. A raw diet, then, may be the best solution for most pets, Bessent said. "My take on it is whether it's raw or cooked, it's really whether it's real food or not," Bessent said. "With raw food, they have to use real food, so it tends to be really good because it is real food." Bessent said most kibble is composed of a high concentration of grains, as well as meal ground up in parts. If it's a plant-based protein meal, it's a problem because dogs and cats are carnivores. If it's meat-based protein, the origin is unknown, and the meat is typically cooked and dehydrated, draining the nutrients. Dog owner Kathy Ullenberg has fed a raw diet to her pets for years, basing it on their carnivore origin. She used to make her own, but now participates in a co-op. "I think they're healthier, they have the amino acids, especially for allergies," Ullenberg said. "And when you switch over, their coats transform." The only time pet owners should be warned against a raw diet, Bessent said, is if they are very ill or have a low immune system. One other issue some pet owners face when looking at raw diets is the price, since some raw diet products tend to be pricey In this . case, Bessent said there are raw co-ops and the option of obtaining scraps from butchers that are usually healthy, wholesome parts for dogs to consume. "There really are ways to do it economically," Bessent said. "The way I see it is pay now or pay later. In the long run you will have more vet bills if your dog is not fed a healthy diet." • Out-of-county mail 13 weeks.............$45 26 weeks............$90 Submitted photo Veterinarian Chris Bessent, shown with her horse Ghost, regularly performs acupuncture and chiropractic services for her large and small animal clients.
