So for example, instead of booking a trip to a London, Paris or Rome, she might opt for an Edinburgh, Budapest or Prague. And her reasoning is is hard to argue with. "These B-side cities give you so much more in terms of enjoyment, pleasure, just easygoing-ness (and) affordability," she explains. "And yet they've got the artists, they've got the culture, they've got the beer, they've got the wine, they've got the dining, they've got one or two museums, if you're into more of the history. But every place to me is a travel destination and so I love those smaller places that really allow people to travel not just five years from now but like two weeks if they wanted to go somewhere." "Samantha Brown's Places to Love" returns for its sixth season Friday, Jan. 6, on PBS stations (check local listings), and once again takes her to places off the beaten path to explore their culture, history, food and people. Among the places she visits in this six episode round are Alaska, St. Augustine, Fla.; Madison, Wis.; and in Friday's season opener, Ireland and Northern Ireland, where she hit city centers in Belfast, Limerick and Donegal, as well as the Atlantic coast to take in some natural wonders. "There are cliffs called Slieve League that are two and a half times higher than the Cliffs of Moher and no one's there," she says. "Where you have busloads of people going to the Cliffs of Moher, in Slieve League not a peep because you're that far north. But not really because it's still a pretty small country. It's so easily driveable. So I highly recommend that." In addition to taking roads less traveled, Brown is a big fan exploring a locale on foot, aided not by a travel guide or cellphone GPS but simply by sight alone. "One thing about going for a walk, and especially away from tourism centers," she says, "is that everything is a discovery and it's your own. ... You're letting your mind wander and so everything becomes a little bit more delightful because it has this discovery element to it."
