The famously acerbic, witty member of the Marx Brothers of stage and screen fame was a reasonably frequent guest on "The Dick Cavett Show" ... and something of a mentor to the host as the latter was transitioning from writer to on- air personality. Highlights of the televised sessions are compiled in PBS' new "American Masters" presentation "Groucho & Cavett" Tuesday, Dec. 27 (check local listings). Filmmaker Robert S. Bader's documentary also includes recently filmed comments from Primetime Emmy winner Cavett, plus related recordings that underscore the unique relationship that Cavett enjoyed having with Marx. An age difference of 45 years only enhanced the friendship that developed between the two men. In an interview for this article, Cavett (whose 1969-75 ABC show repeats weeknights on Decades) spoke about his connection to Marx, both on- and off-camera. Q: How did this special come about? A: Robert Bader, the genius who put this together, has been dealing with my shows – and in doing that, he said one day, "My gosh, do you know how many Groucho shows we've got?" I would have guessed at least four, and there are more like 14. Q: Was there a special feeling for you on days when you knew you'd have Groucho on? A: Every day that I woke up and knew that I'd be facing him later, I was exhilarated, to put it mildly. I certainly was pleased to find that he liked me. I grew up wishing that I knew Groucho, and I would say it was probably the No. 1 benefit I got from this career. It was just incomparably wonderful. Q: Do you consider Groucho to have been a mentor to you? A: Yes, and an encourager. I have several cherished letters from him, one from when he had been on the show and knew me. He said, "I caught you on 'The Merv Griffin Show,' and I think you have struck a mother lode with the (concept of ) a Midwestern boy in the Ivy League." I'd had several jokes about having been a sort of hayseed at Yale, and Groucho said, "You should pursue that." Q: You remark in the documentary that you believe you got "the last of Groucho's prime" in his appearances with you. How pleased are you to have that preserved for all time? A: After the one perfect show I think I got with him, he appeared several more times ... and if you look with an unnecessarily critical eye, you can see each time a slight failing just from age. But never was he unfunny.
