His character is harried in his own way as he tries to adjust to the idea of his eldest daughter (Adria Arjuna) getting married, and there's an added complication not in the earlier editions: Dad's wife (music superstar Gloria Estefan) wants a divorce. And if that's not enough, miserable weather may disrupt the nuptials. Estefan's daughter Emily plays her mother's character at a younger age. Isabela Merced, Diego Boneta, Enrique Murciano and "Saturday Night Live's" Chloe Fineman also are featured. ››› (PG-13: AS, P) (Also on Digital and On Demand) "THE STAIRCASE: THE LIMITED SERIES" Originally told in the form of a true-crime documentary, this dramatic HBO Max adaptation examines the case of a writer (played here by Colin Firth) suspected in the death of his second wife, a well-known businesswoman (Toni Collette) found at the bottom of a staircase in the family home. The clan becomes mired in various legal matters as the investigation develops, also drawing the attention of a documentary crew – and thus paying heed to the original project about the case in something of a meta way. Michael Stuhlbarg, Parker Posey, Juliette Binoche, Dane DeHaan, Olivia DeJonge, Rosemarie DeWitt, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Sophie Turner, Odessa Young and Trini Alvarado also are featured. Some of those who worked on the original version of the story had criticisms of this dramatization. ››› (Not rated, AS, P, V) Since it's the final week of the year, here's a look at several of the hits of the past 12 months that may merit another look before 2022 ends. "TOP GUN: MAVERICK" Just as it became the top hit of 2022 at the movie box office – by far – this long-awaited sequel to Tom Cruise's naval-aviator classic has made its mark loudly on home media, expectedly. Still bucking authority as a test pilot, and paying a professional price for it, Pete "Maverick" Mitchell is assigned to train a new class of Top Gun flyers, one of them being the son (Miles Teller) of his late co-pilot Goose. There's a natural tension between the two men, due largely to a promise made by Maverick that is hindering the younger man's career. Jennifer Connelly also stars as an ex-flame with whom Maverick reunites, with Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro and Ed Harris also appearing ... and Val Kilmer reprising his "Iceman" role from the original film. As it was the first time, the bountiful aerial footage is thrilling. ››› (PG-13: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu- ray, 4K Ultra HD, Digital and On Demand) "JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION" In a way, the fantasy-adventure franchise cycles back to its roots with this latest chapter, reuniting "Jurassic Park" stars Laura Dern, Sam Neill and Jeff Goldblum ... and teaming them with "Jurassic World" fixtures Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. Dinosaurs again roam the planet after the destruction of the island that housed the cloned creatures, and not only do they pose perils of their own, they have impacts on the environment that generate natural dangers. The outcome of the situation will determine whether contemporary mankind and prehistoric beings can coexist. Executive- produced by original "Jurassic" director Steven Spielberg, the film expectedly boasts bountiful special effects. Co-star B.D. Wong returns as well, and Campbell Scott, DeWanda Wise and Kristoffer Polaha also appear. ››› (PG-13: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD, Digital and On Demand) "MINIONS: THE RISE OF GRU" Spun off from the "Despicable Me" movies, the title characters had a major box-office hit with this animated comedy (which actually was delayed for two years by the coronavirus pandemic). The story takes Gru (voiced again by Steve Carell) back to his youth, when he and his supporting Minions (voiced by Pierre Coffin) anger an established group of villains by stealing a very special stone. That gang abducts Gru and threatens him with harm unless the Minions return the object, but in the meantime, Gru learns the finer points of being a bad guy from his captors. Julie Andrews is heard again as Gru's mother, with Alan Arkin, Taraji P. Henson, Michelle Yeoh, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Russell Brand, RZA, Danny Trejo, Lucy Lawless, Dolph Lundgren, Will Arnett and Steve Coogan also in the clearly diverse voice cast. ››› (PG: AS, V) (Also on Blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD, Digital and On Demand) "HALLOWEEN ENDS" It's always risky to call the supposed final chapter of a popular franchise the definitive ending, should there be the desire for another revival, but the makers of this horror chapter maintain that's the case. If so, it's the last stand for Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode, the heroine who has stood up to homicidal Michael Myers (James Jude Courtney) over a 44-year span. Here, she's involved in a familiar scenario, probing whether a babysitter had a hand in the fate of his young charge – and since all roads in this series lead to Michael, you can guess the showdown that inevitably happens. Andi Matichak returns as Laurie's granddaughter, and director and co-writer David Gordon Green is back from the previous two installments. DVD extras: audio commentary by cast and crew members; seven "making-of" documentaries; deleted and extended scenes. ››› (R: AS, P, GV) (Also on Blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD, Digital and On Demand) Jamie Lee Curtis "I just love that music is the core and the heart of this film, and it's what unifies all of us together. And on top of that, to work with the family that we've had was just a dream. And, yeah, it's kind of ruined me now." – Karen David, on singing and acting in the recent "When Christmas Was Young" on CBS " t o u A w w d k – s r W "The thing about his movies is that they really stand up over time. They don't date. You could watch one today and it would be as fresh as when it first came out. And he's always given great roles to women." – Helen Mirren of "1923" on Paramount+, about her husband, director Taylor Hackford ("An Officer and a Gentleman") " i u d to f o g H o h H a "I had an opportunity to work on a series of films this year ('The Love Club'), which was really cool for me. It gave me an opportunity to develop a character and then live with her for quite a while, so I felt pretty lucky." – Brittany Bristow, seen recently in "Wrapped Up in Love" on Lifetime " to f C c a a w s B r i
