The rejected man doesn't take it well, trying to re-establish communication ... prompting the person who broke off contact to threaten a particularly vicious firm of self-harm, which he proves he's fully prepared to follow through on. Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan also star, though the picture clearly belongs to the two central stars as the play out the intense conflict that fuels the story. DVD extras; "making-of" documentary; deleted scenes. ››› (R: AS, N, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray, Digital and On Demand) "SECRET HEADQUARTERS" Luke Wilson played an unlikely superhero on television's "DC's Stargirl," and his brother Owen is in a similar situation in this comedy- adventure. Owen's character's son (Walker Scobell) doesn't suspect his dad's alter ego, The Guard, and the related superpowers until he and some friends find the father's hidden base of operations ... leading to an eventual showdown with powerful villain Argon (Michael Pena). Though the movie was meant for a theatrical run, it received its major distribution via Paramount+; Keith L. Williams, Jesse Williams ("Grey's Anatomy") and Charles Melton also are featured. ››› (PG: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray) "PARADISE CITY" Two screen icons, John Travolta and Bruce Willis, share the same movie again (as they did with "Pulp Fiction") with this action tale from genre specialist Chuck Russell ("Eraser"). Willis plays a bounty hunter thought to have been killed in Maui, drawing his son (Blake Jenner) and an associate of the latter (Stephen Dorff) to the location. There, a powerful and dangerous opponent (Travolta, in another of the villainous roles he clearly relishes) tries to ensure that they don't get the answers they're seeking. Praya Lundberg and Branscombe Richmond also appear. DVD extras: two "making-of" documentaries; audio commentary by Jenner and Russell. ››› (R: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu- ray, Digital and On Demand) As a bonus for the holidays, here's a look at a couple of perennial favorites of the season. "IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE" Upon its release, this Frank Capra-directed 1946 classic had a lukewarm box-office performance that gave no indication it would become as popular as it long as it has been ... its plentiful television exposure being a huge factor. James Stewart makes the perfect George Bailey, the hapless Bedford Falls citizen whose experience of seeing how life would be without him has been echoed by countless television-series episodes. Donna Reed, Lionel Barrymore and – as wing- earning angel Clarence – Henry Travers lend great support. DVD extras: theatrical trailer; "making-of" documentary. ›››› (Not rated: AS) (Also on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD) "A CHRISTMAS STORY" There's never a doubt that this 1983 holiday favorite will come back around, thanks to its annual 24-hour marathon on television. Anyone who ever desired that one special holiday gift can empathize with Ralphie (Peter Billingsley, who grew up to co-produce a stage-musical version of the tale and also star in a new streaming sequel), author- narrator Jean Shepherd's young alias who desperately wants a Red Ryder BB gun ... the one that his mother (Melinda Dillon) consistently warns will "shoot your eye out." Always deserving of citing is Darren McGavin as the gruff dad who doesn't actually curse, though it sure sounds like it. DVD extras: theatrical trailer; three "making- of" documentaries; audio commentary by Billingsley and director and co-writer Bob Clark. ››› (PG: P) (Also on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD) "HOUSE OF THE DRAGON: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON" HBO's prequel to "Game of Thrones" proved so hugely and expectedly popular, its freshman-season finale ended up being leaked early online. The saga features Paddy Considine as a level-headed king and Matt Smith as his considerably more impulsive brother, both involved in a civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. The big production jumps back and forth between a couple of time periods (across several centuries) that may determine the fate of the so-called Seven Kingdoms. Also included in the large cast are Emma D'Arcy, Rhys Ifans, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Olivia Cooke, Graham McTavish and Matthew Needham. The second season of the series is expected to begin filming early in the new year. ››› (Not rated: AS, N, V) (Also on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD) Paddy Considine "It's a really intimate relationship when you act opposite somebody in a movie like this. You're together the entire day every day for three weeks straight, and these guys immediately become my best friends. We're partners." – Ashley Williams, seen recently in "Five More Minutes: Moments Like These" on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries " r y s y l to d t a i m W A s " M o & On a personal note, it has just been a career highlight and a thrill to lead one of these movies.
