The now-former actress was six years old when she made the Frank Capra-directed 1946 movie classic, which NBC gives its long-traditional Christmas Eve telecast Saturday, Dec. 24. Grimes shares some choice scenes with James Stewart as Zuzu's father George, who ponders how life would have been without him – a familiar premise that eventually requires novice angel Clarence (Henry Travers) to show him the way to personal redemption. "I remember the snow," the pleasant Grimes recalls of making the film. "That was what really fascinated me. It doesn't snow in Hollywood, so I had never seen it. It wasn't real, but I thought it was wonderful and fabulous. And, of course, that big Christmas tree really set me on fire. I was an only child, we just had a little tree sitting on a table, and that's how we celebrated Christmas ... and then, here's this gigantic tree. I really loved that." Another "Wonderful" memory for Grimes is of "chasing Jimmy (Stewart) around the set. He was super-tall, and in the movie, I'm on his back or in his arms – always way up there looking down, and that made him seem even taller. Plus, he was so gentle and so kind. Looking back, I realize he really made an effort to make some magic between us." At his initiation, Stewart reunited in 1980 with Grimes, who cites him as "just the most wonderful man." Filmmaker Capra, says Grimes, "would get down on his knee and be on the same level with you when he asked you what he wanted you to do. He didn't exactly tell you; he made you feel like you were a part of the decision." Paramount Home Entertainment has released a number of home-video versions of "It's a Wonderful Life" over the years, encompassing a 4K Ultra HD edition that debuted in 2019. "It's a gift to the people, it really is," Grimes reasons, "and it's exciting, because I know that people love the movie so much. (Paramount) needs to do that just to keep them satisfied." Grimes has had her own successful product run with the film, having written several books it inspired, including "Zuzu Bailey's It's a Wonderful Life Cookbook." She muses that she has it "really well, because people don't recognize me since I grew up. But when they find out who I am, their eyes light up and they're so excited! They just love that little Zuzu, and she has a special place in the hearts of everyone who loves that movie."
