The thriller from executive producer Steven Spielberg – whose exact level of involvement in the film has been the subject of much speculation over the years – and director Tobe Hooper casts Craig T. Nelson and JoBeth Williams as a couple who reside with their children in suburbia, but their seemingly perfect life gets a huge upheaval when otherworldly forces spirit the youngest family member (Heather O'Rourke) into another dimension. Parapsychologists try to help the parents retrieve her. Beatrice Straight ("Network"), Dominique Dunne, Richard Lawson and Zelda Rubinstein also are featured, but the special-effects masters truly are equal stars here. Several "making- of" documentaries are included. ››› (PG: AS, P, V) "THE GREAT AMERICAN RECIPE" All sorts of food, representing multicultural backgrounds from across the United States, are showcased by the home cooks who compete in this PBS series. Much more than in most other contests of this nature, they root for one another as they not only demonstrate their culinary skills, but tell the very personal stories of how they came up with their respective recipes. Alejandra Ramos is the host, with Leah Cohen, Tiffany Derry and Graham Elliot as judges. The show has been renewed for a second season, being planned to air next summer. ››› (Not rated) "THE EQUALIZER: SEASON TWO" In the sophomore round of the CBS series reboot, Robyn McCall (Queen Latifah) considers leaving her troubleshooting behind to focus on personal concerns ... but that doesn't last long, as a new case immediately has her pursuing justice her way again. Ultimately, she's the one in need of help, as indicated by a cliffhanger that's sure to be picked up when the show starts its third season Oct. 2. Though Chris Noth was a member of the regular cast, he was written out over the course of these episodes; Tory Kittles, Adam Goldberg. Liza Lapira and Lorraine Toussaint also are featured. Guest stars include Jada Pinkett Smith. ››› (Not rated: AS, P, V) "THE LOST BOYS" Two brothers, played by Jason Patric and Corey Haim, side with very different factions in their new town as director Joel Schumacher's 1987 horror classic makes its 4K Ultra HD debut. One sibling sides with a vampire biker gang (with Kiefer Sutherland as the leader), while the other joins some self-styled vampire hunters. Jami Gertz, Edward Herrmann, Dianne Wiest, Barnard Hughes and Alex Winter (the latter of "Bill & Ted" fame as well) also appear, and an audio commentary by late filmmaker Schumacher is included as a special feature. The California setting of the tale is authentic, since most of it was filmed in the Santa Cruz area. ›› (R: AS, P, GV) "SERENDIPITY" Part of a new "Girls Rule: The Holidays Collection" set on DVD that also includes "Mean Girls" and "Last Holiday," this charming 2001 romantic comedy casts John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale as two New Yorkers whose paths cross by coincidence, not once but twice. The woman then decides to leave it to fate whether they'll meet a third time and determine if they have a future together, but the man is somewhat more insistent on finding her, enlisting a friend (Jeremy Piven) to accompany him on a search across the Big Apple. John Corbett is hilarious in parodying music star Yanni as the Beckinsale character's current significant other; the strong supporting cast also includes Molly Shannon, Bridget Moynahan ("Blue Bloods") and Eugene Levy. ››› (PG- 13: AS, P) "OUTLANDER: SEASON SIX" With a seventh season of the time-traveling parent show plus a prequel series on the way, this most recent round of the hugely popular Starz adventure-drama – based on Diana Gabaldon's novels – finds the Frasers wanting to live quietly in relative isolation, but that is not to be. The Browns stir trouble with their claim to want to provide safety for all on the Ridge, while Jamie's (Sam Heughan) apparent involvement with another woman causes concern for Claire (Caitriona Balfe). Sophie Skelton, Richard Rankin, Mark Lewis Jones, John Bell, Chris Larkin and Jessica Reynolds also star. A separate "Collector's Edition" is available on Blu-ray.
