August 21 - 27, 2022 • Terre Haute Tribune-Star • 19 tastytv BY GEORGE DICKIE Drummond takes on the 'Big Bad Budget Battle' on Food Network On her show and in her home, "Pioneer Woman" Ree Drummond is a big fan of cooking with what's in her pantry, her freezer and what's left over. Which is why "Big Bad Budget Battle" spoke to her. Airing Tuesdays on Food Network and streaming on discovery+, Drummond hosts as three talented home cooks are tasked with taking everyday, inexpensive ingredients they purchased on a limited budget and turning them into delicious meals to be evaluated by Drummond and a rotating panel of judges including Damaris Phillips, Darnell Ferguson, Eddie Jackson, Beau MacMillan, Catherine McCord and Justin Warner. The one who is deemed the best cook and thriftiest shopper wins a trophy and a year's supply of groceries. "I loved it because it was all about home cooks and real grocery shopping," Drummond says. "You know, not really, 'Let's have a challenge about buying only red foods and see what we can come up with at the grocery store.' It was really about going to the grocery store with a certain budget, being resourceful, utilizing the staples that you already have in your pantry and coming up with the most delicious meal that you can. "So that was a competition show that I could really wrap my head around and feel authentic about in terms of my cooking point of view." The talent on the show also impressed Drummond and not just from a culinary standpoint. These are all home cooks with no formal training and a passion for cooking, so Drummond was excited to hear what inspired them. "They were all allowed and encouraged to bring photos for their stations to stick on their fridges during the cook so that they kind of have the inspiration from home," she says. "Some of them brought a special apron or a special wooden spoon. So those stories were the things that I was really drawn to with the show. And the cooking itself is pretty exciting." While Drummond says all the meals on the show were "beautiful and creative," one stood out. "There was a sort of tortilla soup that was made from leftovers," she says. "And the cook also made a refried bean quesadilla and cut them into small wedges and they were sort of dippers. You know, nothing too complicated but everything just had a little spin. The tortilla soup was made from leftover chicken fajitas. And that was another ... of the challenges we gave them, was to have a meal of leftovers in their fridge and then turn it into something completely different. "And we've all done that," she continues, "and it wasn't just about reheating the leftovers but reimagining what the leftovers could be."
