Hooded Merganser Photograph Wins Wildlife in North Carolina 2021-22 Photo Competition The magazine editorial staff at the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission revealed the grand prize winner of the 2021-22 Wildlife in North Caro- lina Photo Competition last week. The winning image is of two male hooded mergansers vying for the attention of a nearby female. The photograph was taken at Lake Betz in Morrisville by Jian Zheng of Cary. Zheng is a software engineer who began dabbling in photography by taking pictures of birds in his backyard while working from home. When he became unsatisfi ed with the confi nes of his backyard, he ventured to other natural places. "I explored more birds and wild animals and recorded what I saw with my camera. I often visit nearby parks, wildlife sanctuaries, and use my vacations to explore farther, unknown places," Zheng said. Zheng enjoys photographing birds most because they are beautiful, and you can fi nd them anywhere. Over 1,800 entries were submitted to the Photo Competition. Singling out winners was a challenge; many talented photographers subscribe to the magazine. "Each year, I have the honor of being part of a panel of judges who get to review hun- dreds of beautiful images from all over North Carolina," said Marsha Tillett, art director of Wildlife in North Carolina (WINC). "This year's grand prize winner stood out from the rest with exceptional color and composition. But this winning photograph also had something more to it that really connected with the judg- es. I think we all agreed that seeing animal behavior captured so eloquently really set this image apart." In addition to Tillett, the judging panel con- sisted of Bryant Cole, graphic designer with the Wildlife Commission, Melissa McGaw, photographer with the Wildlife Commission, Thomas Harvey, a former Wildlife Commis- sion employee and photographer, and Mike Dunn, a photographer and naturalist. As grand prize winner, Zheng's photo is fea- tured on the cover of the July/August 2022 WINC issue and he will receive $200. All winning photographs will be displayed on the Wildlife Commission's website. Submitted by Mindy Wharton Two hooded merganser drakes bid for the attention of a single female by performing a number of displays, such as raising their white head crests, head-shaking, "head-throwing," head-pumping and uttering frog-like croaks. Zheng's photo is featured on the cover of WINC July/Aug 2022 issue. DANYALE PATTERSON (4th & Final Part of the "Freedom" series) Have you ever driven somewhere and had someone either in the backseat, or on the pas- senger side, constantly telling you what to do instead of letting you drive? Or, were you that person being the "back- seat' driver? LOL! Either way, it reminds me of how we love to be in control over every aspect of our lives. We say to the Lord, "You are the driver of my life." Then, we give him a list of demands of what he needs to do for us and where he needs to take us, instead of patiently trust- ing him to lead us on this journey of life. In Matthew 16:24 (MSG) Jesus stated, "Anyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead. You're not in the driv- er's seat; I am…" The Gift of Grace Why is it hard to relin- quish that control? I believe it's because we love to ap- pear strong and invincible. Control makes us feel pow- erful. I don't know anyone who wants to feel weak and vulnerable. I actually have a friend who is terrified to let any- one ever s e e h e r cry. The truth is we all have w e a k - nesses: we experience pain, dis- a p p o i n t - ment, fear, and anger. At times, we just don't know what to do - and it can feel stressful and over- whelming! Fortunately, God knows that we have struggles and He offers something bet- ter than the need for control. He provides GRACE! In 2 Corinthians 12:9 (NLT), Apostle Paul (who had many difficult trials) states: "Each time he (Jesus) said, 'My grace is all you need. My power works best in weak- ness.' So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me." God is Trustworthy Our Heavenly Father promises to never abandon us and to always help us. I have found that there is more freedom in trusting him than trying to control what I can't control. Jeremiah 17:7-8 (NLT) states, "But blessed are those who trust in the LORD and have made the LORD their hope and con- fidence. They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit." PRAY THIS PRAYER: "Father, I praise you for being the Ancient of Days - You know everything! For- give me for trying to do things my way, instead of allowing you to lead me. I admit that uncertainty bothers me until I put my full trust in you. Lord, each time I focus on you and your word, my heart is filled with peace. Thank you for being the Prince of Peace. I ask you to show me what you want me to do, and let your gentle Spirit lead me in the right path. Guide me by your truth and teach me, for you are the God who saves and leads me. All day long I put my hope in you. In Jesus' name I pray - Amen." Danyale Patterson would love to hear from you!
