So, too, can they create a great point guard, according to a documentary upcoming on Showtime. "NYC Point Gods," premiering Friday, July 29, looks at the many legendary point guards that came out of New York City in the 1980s, guys who made their names on the playground courts of the five boroughs and went on to excel in the college and in some cases pro ranks. It also explores their common traits as well as the conditions that helped forge their talents. So in the 80-minute film, viewers hear the stories of Mark Jackson, God Shammgod, Pearl Washington, Kenny Anderson, Stephon Marbury, Rod Strickland, Kenny Smith and Rafer Alston – all tough players with a talent for ball control, no-look passes, misdirection and most importantly, showmanship. "We didn't want to just look back and say, 'Look, look at all these great point guards that have come out of New York City,' " explains Stephen Espinoza, Showtime's president of sports and event programming. "But look at why New York City. What about New York City contributes to the style of play? What made these players? What has changed over the years and how did we end up with this crop of such high-caliber point guards not just of a certain position but a certain mold and style of play?" Obviously, that goes back to the city playgrounds, where they had to play a rough- and-tumble style of basketball in front of sometimes hundreds of onlookers. So early on these kids got an education in toughness and coping with pressure that served them later on. On the downside, however, the documentary also points out that they were victims of this environment, as the city's rigid double rims – a product of the era's budget cuts – discouraged outside shooting, so many of these players had mediocre jump-shooting skills. "Kevin Durant said the funniest thing when I told him ... about that part of it," says Rich Kleiman, an executive producer with NBA star Durant for Boardroom. "He was like, 'Man, everybody has to deal with bad rims and outdoor things. New York City point guards just don't work on their game.' And I thought it was the funniest thing ever. ... It wasn't cool to have a jump shot like that back then."
