The actor had three legendary starring roles to his credit when he met his very untimely fate in a car accident on Sept. 30, 1955 (a date so significant to so many, it became the title of a Dean-themed 1978 drama). The second of those parts is on display as Turner Classic Movies presents "Rebel Without a Cause" Saturday, July 23, as part of the Alicia Malone-hosted "Follow the Thread" series that examines memorable films through their fashions. Dean certainly wore his unique look well as Jim Stark, a trouble-prone young man whose parents (Jim Backus, Ann Doran) have relocated with him to try to give him a fresh start. Things go badly for him almost immediately, but he finds some respite with neighbor Judy (Natalie Wood) and fellow outcast Plato (Sal Mineo). Still, the trouble doesn't end for Jim, with a game of automotive "chicken" being a sign of the problems to come. Directed by Nicholas Ray, "Rebel Without a Cause" was released the same year as "East of Eden," the adaptation of John Steinbeck's novel that made Dean an Oscar nominee and cemented him immediately as a screen surrogate for youths who felt misunderstood and adrift. He certainly carried that image into "Rebel," earning him wide praise at the time (encompassing the first posthumous Oscar nomination for someone), but also landing him a singular place in pop culture that still endures. A sad irony is that Dean got to enjoy his new status for only a brief time, and really only from "East of Eden." He died in the aforementioned auto accident a month before "Rebel" was released, causing discomfort for some viewers over the movie's car-race scenes given the real- life circumstances. By that time, Dean was far into production on what would be his final film, the 1956 epic "Giant" (for which he was Oscar- nominated posthumously again). The "Follow the Thread" presentation of "Rebel Without a Cause" is part of a TCM night that bears the subtitle "Films That Changed Everything," which is completely accurate in this case. Dean's anguished delivery of the line, "You're tearing me apart!," spoke to an entire generation. Jobs in televised plays and the Dean Martin- Jerry Lewis comedy "Sailor Beware" had preceded what were the big three movies for Dean, but the impact of that trio is undeniable and lasting. "Rebel Without a Cause" has been a part of the National Film Registry since 1990, and thanks in part to that fact and to TCM (which shows it frequently), it will keep affecting people now and well into the future.
