July 17 - 23, 2022 • Terre Haute Tribune-Star • 19 tastytv BY GEORGE DICKIE Ballpark food: It's not just hot dogs anymore To take a tour of major league ballparks these days is to take a culinary tour of America. Indeed, gone are the days when the fare at baseball games were limited to hot dogs, pretzels, peanuts and Cracker Jack. Now, diners can expect diversity and imagination with an emphasis on local ingredients when they plunk down their hard-earned cash to see their favorite team. That's especially the case at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, where crab is king and the crab cake sandwich is the popular choice. Its ingredients are simple – lump crab with Old Bay seasoning topped with lettuce, tomato and onion on a bun. At $11, it's relatively inexpensive slice of heaven from the sea. Also a local favorite is the Rocky Mountain Oyster Po'Boy at Denver's Coors Field, home of the Colorado Rockies. If you're not in on the joke, Rocky Mountain oysters are bulls testicles, which in this case are skinned, coated in flour, pepper and salt then deep-fried and served on a roll with guacamole, green chili ranch sauce, garlic coleslaw, pico and cotija cheese. These "oysters" are considered a delicacy in Colorado, which is about 1,500 miles from any ocean, though others might look at it as cuisine based on a dare. Also on the esoteric side are the Toasted Grasshoppers of T-Mobile Park, where the Seattle Mariners call home. It's actually a Mexican delicacy from the state of the Oaxaca, where they're harvested, and since they were introduced in 2017 sales have skyrocketed. At $5 for about 40 insects, it's a bargain for anyone looking for a high-protein treat. Polish food is big in Pittsburgh, home of the Pirates and PNC Park, where an eccentric concoction known as the Pittsburgh Cone is popular. As the name implies, it's a waffle cone stuffed with kielbasa, pierogi, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and Russian dressing. It's not exactly for those who are watching their weight but it's a must for anyone who loves imaginative Polish food. And while we're on the subject of coned delights, how about the Wowfulls at New York's Citi Field, where the Mets play? It's basically an ice cream cone on steroids – an oversized waffle cone filled with ice cream and anything from sprinkles and chocolate chips to Fruity Pebbles and Oreo Crumbs, depending on which of three variations you order. It's so good even the Mets' broadcasters make reference to it on the air.
