Email editor@sgstartimes.com Loyd named to UK Spring Dean's List Brylee Loyd of Fort Branch, Pre-Communica- tion Sciences and Disorders, was named to the University of Kentucky Dean's List for the Spring 2022 semester. To make a Dean's List in one of the UK colleges, a stu- dent must earn a grade-point average of 3.6 or higher and must have earned 12 credits or more in that semester, exclud- ing credits earned in pass-fail classes. Community Foundation awards $23k The Gibson County Com- munity Foundation announc- es the distribution of com- munity scholarships total- ing $23,400. This year, funds established by generous do- nors, provided scholarships for 13 area students. In addition to announcing the recipients, the Regional Director of Community En- gagement & Impact, Amy Smith states, "The Gibson County Community Founda- tion is thankful to our gener- ous fund founders and donors who make these scholarship awards possible. Their invest- ment in post-secondary edu- cational opportunities will greatly benefit each of the recipient's futures. The pro- cess of choosing who will be awarded each of these schol- arships is undertaken with dedication and discipline by a committee of volunteer lead- ers. We are grateful for their hard work and dedication. The process is never easy be- cause our Gibson County stu- dents are outstanding." The scholarships awards are: • The 1971 WMHS Alum- ni Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by the Wood Memorial High School Class of 1971 Alumni. This year's award is $500 and the recipient is Mykayla Spindler, Wood Memorial High School. • The Arts Council of Gib- son County Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by the Arts Council of Gib- son County to benefit gradu- ating seniors of Gibson Coun- ty high schools pursuing ad- vanced education in the fields of art, drama, or music. From 1991 to 2007, the Arts Coun- cil of Gibson County fulfilled its mission of encouraging, assisting, coordinating, and promoting cultural arts ac- tivities in Gibson County by providing "informances" and clinics for all Gibson County students in grades K-12. This year's award is $2,500 and the recipient is Lillian Parmer. • The Betty Ann Mc- Cullough Education Grant is an annual scholarship created by the family and friends of Betty Ann Mc- Cullough. This year's award is $1,000 and the recipient is Michael Goodwin, Princeton Community High School. • The Kevin Dillon Gibson Southern Memorial Scholar- ship is an annual scholarship created by the family of Kev- in Dillon. This year's award is $1,500 and the recipient is Helen Kiesel, Gibson South- ern High School. • The Lois Brink Memo- rial Nursing Scholarship is an annual scholarship cre- ated by Bruce C. Brink Sr. in memory of his wife, Lois. This year's award is $ 3,000 and the recipient is Maci Fos- ter, a 2020 graduate of Gibson Southern High School, cur- rently attending the Univer- sity of Southern Indiana. • The Lura and Doyle Skel- ton Family Memorial Scholar- ship is a renewable scholar- ship created by the Hillside United Methodist Church and Lawrence F. Skelton in memory of his parents. The student must be an ac- tive member of the Hillside United Methodist Church in Princeton, Ind. This year's award amount is $1,500 and the recipient is Jaleigh White, Princeton Community High School. • The Norma J. Byrne Me- morial Scholarship was cre- ated by Georgianne and Jim Parshall in loving memory of Georgianne's mother, Norma Briner Byrne. Norma grew up in Hazleton before settling in Princeton after her marriage to Patrick Byrne and received her nursing degrees from the University of Evansville and Indiana State University. She enjoyed her years as a nurse in Princeton Community Schools. This year's award is $1,000 and the recipient is Madelyn Cummins, Prince- ton Community High School. • The Patrick D. Byrne Jr. Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship created by Georgianne and Jim Par- shall in loving memory of Georgianne's father, Pat By- rne. Pat was a proud mechan- ical engineering graduate of Purdue University and pres- ident of Byrne Motors. Pat dedicated his life to helping his neighbors and serving the community. This year's award is $1,000 and the re- cipient is Michael Goodwin, Princeton Community High School. • The Project Associates Engineering Scholarship is an annual scholarship cre- ated by Project Associates, Inc. to provide scholarships for engineering students at- tending or planning to attend the University of Evansville or the University of Southern Indiana. This year's award is $2,500 and the recipient is Michael Goodwin, Prince- ton Community High School. • The Raymond and Gretchen Ceney Memorial Scholarship is a scholarship fund established in memory of Raymond and Gretchen to help students pursue ad- vanced education. This year's award is $1,500 and the recip- ient is Karis Blacklock, Wood Memorial High School. • The South Gibson Col- lege Continuation Scholar- ship is an annual scholarship created by Genie Gard to help current college students (ris- ing sophomores through se- niors) continue their educa- tional pursuits. This year's award is $1,000 and the re- cipient is Alexis Coy, Gibson Southern High School. • The Sutch–Briner Me- morial Scholarship is an an- nual scholarship created by Charles P. and Cathy J. Bri- ner in loving memory of Pau- line Hassel Briner Sutch, George Lester Sutch, and Jane McFetridge Sutch. This year's award is $ 900 and the recipient is Kaitlyn Dunkel, Princeton Community High School. • The Warren W. Parke Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship created in loving memory of Warren W. Parke by his daughter to hon- or his passion for sports, his contributions to the commu- nity, and his commitment to education. This year's award is $500 and the recipient is Lucas Gress, Wood Memori- al High School. • The William and Lois Jackson Memorial Scholar- ship was established by Ed Jackson, Alan Jackson, and Sue Jackson Rains to sup- port a student's first year of college – one award for a stu- dent majoring in arts and hu- manities and another award for a student majoring in sci- ence, technology, engineer- ing, or math. This year's STEM award, in the amount of $1,000 was received by Hal- le Humbaugh, Gibson South- ern High School. • In addition, the Com- munity Foundation adminis- ters the Gibson County Lil- ly Endowment Community Scholarship program. As in years past, the Community Foundation awards scholar- ships to the student select- ed as the alternate for the Lilly Endowment Communi- ty Scholarship. The scholar- ships are made possible by donors to the Friends of Gib- son County endowment fund. The amount being awarded this year is $4,000 (paid out over four years of college) and the recipient is Maura Kluesner, Gibson Southern High School. The Gibson County Com- munity Foundation County Advisory Board would like to thank the parents, family members, teachers, school administrators, coaches, mentors, and everyone who has inspired these students to be the very best they can be. Congratulations to these out- standing students and their families. We wish you the best as you pursue your col- lege degrees and future op- portunities. Vertical Church awards $10k Vertical Church in Fort Branch has announced the recipients of their first annual Vertical Church Scholarship. Ten high achieving students who attend Vertical Church each received $1,000 for their first year as a full-time stu- dent at an accredited two or four year college or universi- ty. Recipients will also receive additional funds for three re- curring years after the initial year, for a total of four years. Scholarship recipients were selected based upon accom- plishments in the areas of ac- ademics, leadership, church and community service, and extracurricular activities. According to Pastor Rich Clark, "This scholarship would not be possible with- out Arthur Earl and Kathleen Mae Leister, who created a Charitable Trust which gen- erously provided the schol- arship funds. It is our hope and prayer that this scholar- ship will be a blessing to ma- ny Vertical students now and into the future in pursing their educational goals." Ivy Tech plans STEM camp Ivy Tech is planning two free summer STEM Camps on June 20 -24 and July 11-15 from noon-4:30 p.m. for chil- dren 4th grade and up. The camp will take place Mon- day-Friday on these weeks, at the main campus, 3501 N First Avenue, Evansville. Activities at the camp will in- clude such things as learning about animation, robot com- mands, 3D print pens, scratch programming, stomp rockets, 3D printing, circuit decorating, Drawbots, and VEX robotics. Snacks and structured games will be provided. Campers will select one project to work on during the week that they will enter in- to the STEM Fair on Friday of each camp week. At the STEM Fair, judges will inspect each camper's project as the camp- ers explain it.
