Boeke Award as the outstand- ing student in the University of Evansville's associate de- gree nursing program. Mrs. Adams was selected on the ba- sis of high scholastic achieve- ment, dependability, leader- ship, quality nursing care, and membership and participation in campus and community or- ganizations. Karen Ann Williamson and Marjorie Thorne arrived in Germany on May 30. They will be visiting and sight-see- ing with Mr. and Mrs. Ot- to Mathies of Ulm, Germa- ny. Karen is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul William- son of Fort Branch. Marjorie is the daughter of Mrs. Ag- nes Thorne of Hwy. 64 East of Oakland City. Brenda Williams was among the 73 new members who were initiated into Pi Lambda Theta, honor and professional organization for women in education, at Indi- ana State University on May 20. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James T. Williams, Fort Branch, and a 1969 grad- uate of Fort Branch High School. Deaths: Porter Raymond Newman, 56, passed away Wednesday afternoon. 45 YEARS AGO Fort Branch Times Friday, June 10, 1977 Bill Angermeier has joined the staff of the Farmers and Merchants Bank of Fort Branch and will be working in the Farm Department. Ac- cording to James Pfister, Pres- ident, Angermeier brings with him a thorough knowledge in the Agri-Business field, and we are proud have him as a new member of our staff. An- germeier has been manager of W.R. Grace Company's fertil- izer plant in Fort Branch for the past twelve years. He is a member of the Fort Branch Optimist Club, Holy Cross Church, and VFW Post 2714. The Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing will con- duct commencement exer- cises June 12 at 7:30 p.m. in St. John's United Church of Christ, 314 Market Street, Evansville. Diplomas will be awarded to the 62 members of the Class of 1977 who rep- resent 28 cities and 5 states. Among the graduates are Kathy Wehmer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Christian Weh- mer of Fort Branch, and Lynn Halbig, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Allen G. Halbig of Haub- stadt. Deaconess Executive Director David A. Johnson will welcome the students, their families and guests, while the President of the Board of Di- rectors Bernard E. Schnacke will award the diploma. Key- note speaker for the event will be Mrs. Thelma Dickerson, Ed. D., the Director of Nurs- ing at Fort Sanders Presby- terian Hospital in Knoxville, Tenn. Someone with a de- sire to do something import- ant for the community. Some- one with courage and dedica- tion, who isn't afraid of hard work, and is willing to accept the challenge of a difficult job. It takes a person who consid- ers respect and appreciation reward enough and who is just glad to help. If you're this kind of person, you're needed as a a volunteer fire fighter. the Fort Branch Fire Department might be able to fit you with a pair of boots. Gibson Stockmen 4-H Club held a fund-raiser re- cently. The grand prize was $100 Shopping Spree at Nor- man's Finer Foods. Norman Stevens is pictured present- ing the prize to Sharon Proc- tor of Tennyson. Beverly Sin- gleton, adult leader of Gibson Stockmen also was present. The new 4-H club will use the money raised for club expens- es, trips and awards. St. Paul's United Church of Christ, east of Fort Branch, held a ground breaking cer- emony for a new addition to the church on May 31. The new addition will consist of a large assembly room, also used as class-rooms, a kitch- en, restrooms, and will include a ramp for easier access by the handicapped. During the reg- ular children's service, Pas- tor Jean Carmean explained ground-breaking and gave each child a small, red shovel with the child's name and the date on it. A fter morning wor- ship, everyone went outdoors on the hill-side, where Pas- tor Carmean led the group in prayer and made appropriate remarks, after which she used the "gold" shovel to turn the first ground. She was followed by the Trustees, members of the Building Committee, the children and then anyone who desired to take part. Everyone present,from the oldest of 77 years old to the youngest of 1 year old participated joyously. St. Paul's people felt this was an important day in the elev- en year history of the church. Goodson, 89, passed away Wednesday, June 3 at Gibson General hospital. 25 YEARS South Gibson Star-Times Thursday, June 10, 1997 A South Gibson community was one of two Southwestern Indiana cities to receive fed- eral grants June 4. Indiana Lt. Gov. Joe Kernan announced last week that Owensville re- ceived a $480,000 grant award from the Community Focus Fund (CFF) to construct a new water tower and replace water lines. The federally funded Small Cities Commu- nity Development Block Grant program is administered by the Indiana Department of Commerce. Owensville was successful on its third attempt at receiving the CCF grant. Town officials were notified in Oct. 1996 that Owensville had been denied a CFF grant for the second consecutive time. An application seeking the grant was submitted in April 1996 and later rejected. Ow- ensville Clerk-treasurer Mo- na Taylor and town Council- man Bernard Thompson trav- eled to Indianapolis June 4 to receive the CFF awards cer- tificate from the Indiana De- partment of Commerce. Deb- bie Gerlach of Vizions Inc. of Santa Claus, Ind., also attend- ed the presentation ceremony. Vizions is serving as adminis- trator of the grant for Owens- ville. Taylor admitted town of- ficials were surprised Owens- ville received the CFF grant. "We are excited and pleased," Taylor said in discussing town officials' reaction to being awarded the CFF grant. "We are excited about improving the water system and trying to improve the quality of wa- ter for the citizens of Owens- ville." "We hope that the citizens will bear with us during this process because the water will be all stirred up during the process." Some Gibson County crops may need to be replanted as a result of recent rainfalls in the Tri-State area, according to county extension educa- tor for agriculture and natu- ral resources Terry Keeneth. "We are going to have some re- planted, probably a lot of soy- beans," Keeneth said in refer- ring to area crops. "Now, the question is what to do on re- planting. It is going to be an- other week or two before it is dry enough to replant in the bottoms." David Humphrey, a meteorologist with the Na- tional Weather Service Pa- ducah, Ky., office, said recent rainfall totals at the Evansville Regional Airport included 1.79 inches on May 30, 1.36 inch- es on May 31, 0.7 of an inch on June 1 an 0.03 of an inch on June 2. During the month of May, Evansville received 7.57 inches of rain. Humphrey said that amount is 2.82 inch- es above normal for May. Thus far this year, 26.89 inches of rain have been reported at the Evansville airport. Humphrey said that amount is 7.39 inch- es above normal. As far as Riv- er levels were concerned, the Wabash River at Mount Carm- el, Ill., was reportedly at 16.1 feet June 3 and was expected to crest at 19.2 feet June 11. Flood stage for the Wabash River at Mount Carmel is 19 feet. Gibson County student Amanda Zehner, a sophomore at the University of Southern Indiana, will participate in one of the study abroad programs offered through USI, spending the 1997 fall semester at Har- laxton College in Grantham, England. The daughter of Ron- ald and Anne Zehner, Aman- da is majoring in account- ing at USI. She is a gradu- ate of Gibson Southern High School. Harlaxton College is a self-contained campus set in a 100 -room Victorian man- or house located in central En- gland. Harlaxton, owned and operated by the University of Evansville, serves as a study abroad program for the stu- dents and faculty of a select group of U.S. colleges, includ- ing the University of Southern Indiana. About 175 American students attend Harlaxton each semester. USI students will begin participating for the first time during the 1997 fall semester.
