After winning a Tony Award for "Thoroughly Modern Millie," the singer-actress earned her second one for the Cole Porter-fueled musical "Anything Goes," and she reprised her portrayal of ocean-bound singer Reno Sweeney in a revival In London's West End last year. Shown in U.S. theaters last month, that staging will be presented as part of the "Broadway's Best" series on PBS' "Great Performances" Friday, May 13 (check local listings). First staged in 1934, the show is set aboard a ship sailing from New York to London, which also carries the stockbroker Reno loves (played by Samuel Edwards) ... but he loves an heiress (Nicole-Lily Baisden) who's also on the passenger list and engaged to a member of British nobility. A gangster (Robert Lindsay) is a traveler, too, posing as a minister; Felicity Kendal and Gary Wilmot also star. Besides the title tune, the score includes the Porter classics "You're the Top" and "I Get a Kick Out of You." "It was such a gift," the pleasant Foster reflects of getting to do "Anything Goes" again overseas. "I'd never had the opportunity to revisit a character like that, let alone 10 years later ... and to be able to make my West End debut with it, it was pretty remarkable." Also known for the series "Younger," Foster appreciates that via the recording, her rendering of "Anything Goes" will "live forever. My daughter is 5, and though she saw the show in London, she said, 'I want to watch it again!' If something is done live, it usually exists only in our memories, and I love that that's what we do in theater. At the same time, I'm really grateful to be able to have this." Keeping the legacy of "Anything Goes" going clearly means a lot to Foster: "These are some pretty exceptional tunes, and the show itself is such a fizzy tonic for our times. That was what was so great about doing it last summer, emerging from a COVID lockdown to be part of a show that is joy and laughter and gorgeous orchestration and glamorous costumes. We're just providing people with escapism." The fact that "Great Performances" is the television showcase for "Anything Goes" has huge significance for Foster. "When I was an aspiring young performer," she explains, "(that series) was my outlet to this world. It was my lifeline to New York City, and especially to musical theater ... so to be a part of it, I'm so excited. Maybe it'll inspire someone who has never seen a show. I can't help but think about that."
