AUGUST 2013 Freeman Brookfield & Elm Grove/Page 7A East beats Central in baseball regional Lynch wins pitching duel By Tony Mooren BROOKFIELD – Brookfield Central High School junior infielder/pitcher Elijah Goodman was named Player of the Year in Greater Metro Conference. Voted by the conference baseball coaches, Goodman was joined on the first team by Central junior infielder Riley Richarz, Brookfield East junior pitcher Griffin Lynch and senior infielder Nick Kanavas and Menomonee Falls senior outfielder Brendan Krause. Freeman Correspondent BROOKFIELD – Brookfield East certainly seems to have its crosstown rival's number. But it was sure a little number July 12. The Brookfield East High School baseball team ousted Brookfield Central 2-1 in a WIAA regional championship game at Central for their seventh victory over Central in their last eight meetings. East senior pitcher Griffin Lynch outdueled Greater Metro Conference Player of the Year Elijah Goodman. Goodman scattered six hits – three of them infield hits – through 5 2/3 innings, but the final two were enough in a sixth-inning rally for the victory. Lynch, meanwhile, yielded only three hits – two of them in the fourth inning when the Lancers scored their lone run – and struck out 10 while issuing only one walk. "His last four outings, this is exactly what he's been doing," East coach Bill Woodring said of Lynch. Lynch admitted, "I've been pitching pretty well lately" and he beat the Lancers once before this season when "I didn't pitch this well." But he was anticipating this matchup, noting, "From the first inning I was pumped up and dialed in." He needed only 78 pitches for the victory – a victory that seemed as if it might elude the Spartans when Goodman rapped a one-out single and senior third baseman Connor Shipman belted a two-out double for a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. But the Lancers didn't get another hit until the seventh when Goodman led off with a single and was advanced to second on a sacrifice by junior first baseman Luke Sommerfeld. But Lynch struck out the next hitter and got the final out on a grounder to second. Lynch allowed only four balls to be hit out of the infield – three of them on – Freeman Staff GREATER METRO CONFERENCE 2013 All-Conference Baseball Team Name Elijah Goodman Marsha Fensin photo the hits. East got its first two runners on base against Goodman in the second inning but couldn't score as Goodman struck out the next three hitters. But then East senior catcher Sam Brunker singled to start the sixth inning and a wild pitch advanced him to second. Senior shortstop Nick Kanavas tied the game with an RBI single, and he stole second base. Walks to senior first baseman Matt Eberle and Lynch loaded the bases with one out, and sophomore center fielder Alex McGuire hit a sacrifice fly to right for what proved to be the winning run. "It was kind of crazy," McGuire said of his first game-winning RBI from the No. 7 spot in the lineup. "We brought him (McGuire) up halfway through the season because we needed some help in the outfield," East coach bill Woodring said. "From Day 1 he impressed me the way he focused and let things roll off his back. He stays with it no matter what happens. His first two at-bats of the season he struggled and was swinging at the ball after it was already in the catcher's mitt. He was so used to jayvee pitching and he had a rude awakening. It probably took him three games before he started to hit." Kanavas finished 2 for 3 with an intentional walk, a run scored, an RBI and two stolen bases. "I was seeing a lot of sliders the whole game and I hit the only slider he (Goodman) hung in the sixth," Kanavas said. "It was a 2-2 count and I was pretty sure he'd come with it." Couldn't that have happened after the secondinning miss? "We just kept on fighting. That's baseball," Kanavas said. "If you don't get the job done one inning, you try to do it the next inning." "I thought we were going to do it (score) in the second inning but then bang, bang, bang and we were done. I was a little more confident in the sixth. Whatever we do as a team hitting, Nick's usually involved." And Brunker finished with three of East's eight hits while No. 9 hitter, senior third baseman Eddie Fitting, matched Kanavas' two hits. "We didn't compete as well as we needed to at the plate," Central coach Jeff Bigler said. "I thought Lynch was spectacular. 232140006 57th Annual Maxwell street days Celebrate our flea market FIELD PARK, MUKWONAGO - Hwys 83 & NN OVER 600 SELLERS Offering a Variety of Goods (Buyers allowed on grounds after 7 am) Reasonable Off-site Parking Available (Pets, Bicycles & Skateboards Prohibited) For information and 2013 schedule: www.maxwellstreetdays.net www.mukwonagochamber.org FOOD & REFRESHMENTS Available on Grounds 230341001 ADMISSION CO-COACHES OF THE YEAR Team Oak Creek West Allis Central Name Jeff Mierow Look at the numbers. With their season in the balance, they did it again. The Kettle Moraine High School baseball team extended its record to 15-2 in games decided by one or two runs this season with a 2-0 WIAA sectional semifinal triumph July 15 over Brookfield East at Brookfield Central High School. Senior Keith Koehn and junior Austin Wolf combined to pitch a five-hit shutout for the Lasers, who scored the only run they would need in the bottom of the third inning when junior infielder Brady Durni hit a two-out single and raced home on a double by Koehn. Lynch retired the first six batters he faced before the Lasers tallied the go-ahead run in the third. "'Griff' did a great job of keeping his pitches here, there and everywhere," East coach Bill Woodring said. – Mark Hutchinson / Freeman Staff Name Matt Goetz Evan Kruczynski Griffin Lynch Alex Herman Ben Carpenter Elijah Goodman Nick Kanavas Brendan Krause Riley Richarz Marcel Mundt Dakota Slone Nick Sotiros Steffen Uhrich Chad Walton Hayden Krimmer Name Matt Ausloos Tyler Gentz Brendan Paule Sam Brunker Brendan Burdick Mike Frieseke Mitch Hart Cole Hernikl Aaron Mushall Doran Turchin Matt Hamilton Justin Johnson Taylor Paepke Bobby Von Rueden Ryan Rouse Year Junior ASSISTANT COACH OF THE YEAR Team Brookfield Central Central's Elijah Goodman had two hits in a regional final at Central on July 12.
