February 27 - March 5, 2022 • Terre Haute Tribune-Star • 19 tastytv BY GEORGE DICKIE 'This Is Us' actress Chrissy Metz is a dyed-in-the-wool baker In the category of actors with kitchen chops, we present for your consideration Chrissy Metz. Indeed, the Florida-born and -raised actress who plays Kate Pearson in the multigenerational family drama "This Is Us" – which airs Tuesdays on NBC and streams on Peacock – is a lifelong cook and baker who learned at the side of her mother and isn't afraid to take on big holiday meals when the occasion presents itself. In fact for this past Thanksgiving's dinner, she decided to bake a number of pies and and make some side dishes, which she soon realized was too ambitious. "I felt overwhelmed," Metz admits. "I had this delusion of grandeur that I was going to do seven pies and when it turned one in the morning the night before, I was like 'Chrissy, you've got to go to bed because you've got to wake up and make other things and decorate the table and blah, blah, blah.' So you know, everybody was pleasantly surprised at the pies. So I do love to bake. I don't do it a lot but when I do I really do enjoy it." She enjoys being in the kitchen in general, and her creativity is evident in her web series "Quarantine Cooking," which she and best friend Donnie Berry shot for social media two years ago when the pandemic first hit. Here, the duo share their favorite kitchen tips and tricks while emphasizing cooking as a form of therapy to help viewers keep their spirits up while in self-isolation. And Metz is also into wine in a big way, having launched Joyful Heart Wine Company in September 2021. Created to, as its website says, celebrate "the union of sharing wine and the spirit of generosity," its wines are currently available in three varietals – red and white blends and a limited edition reserve – with prices ranging from $16 to $40. Part of the proceeds go to World Central Kitchen, a not-for- profit that provides meals to communities in the wake of natural disasters. But it is baking that is Metz's first love. She says her pumpkin roll is the closest thing she has to a specialty and she always makes her own crust, never using store-bought. She's clearly old school, something that came from her family. "My mom is a really great baker, so is my sister," Metz says, "and growing up she used to make all of our birthday cakes and birthday cakes for co-workers and neighbors and had a little side business, so to speak. So maybe I come from the blood of bakers or something. But I have not perfected anything yet."
