In "All American: Homecoming," premiering Monday, Feb. 21, we are introduced to the students of the fictional Bringston University, where Black excellence is a way of life. It is here where Simone (Geffri Maya, "All American") and Damon (Peyton Alex Smith, "Legacies") pursue their respective dreams of playing tennis and baseball while going to class and getting an education. Also at this HBCU are Thea (Camille Hyde, "Katy Keene"), the uber-competitive queen bee of the tennis team; JR (Sylvester Powell, "Five Points"), Damon's teammate and childhood friend; Keisha (Netta Walker, "Come As You Are"), the school's unofficial mayor who takes Simone under her wing; and Coach Turner (Cory Hardrict, "The Outpost"), who is determined to bring a championship to Bringston and to mold Damon into a successful player – and person. The series comes from the makers of the critically lauded CW series "All American" and it endeavors to spotlight what life is like on a typical HBCU campus. "It's very much a character on the show, Bringston University ...," explains executive producer Nkechi Okoro Carroll. "(It) is very much the life force of the show and the source of home and heart and soul and sort of everything for the students. And so it's a very specific experience at an HBCU, and we wanted to make sure we were bringing that specificity. Because I very much believe that that specificity is actually what's going to make the experience universal for everyone." For lead actors Maya and Smith, part of preparing for their roles meant making sure they looked at least competent in their respective sports. So that meant seeking out training, Maya with a tennis coach and Smith with a coach from the Atlanta Braves organization. "(I was) just really wanting to dedicate myself to the sport," Maya explains. "Because at the end of the day, it's such a beautiful sport and it's a sport that is literally full mind, full body and full spirit. ... Especially with sports, you just want to respect it. So I was in them classes every other week, every other day, working out." "I have a lot more respect for the sport," Smith says of baseball, "cause it is not an easy sport. Those are athletes out there."
