Premiering Monday, Feb. 14, on SundanceTV, SundanceNow and AMC+, the sophomore round of 10 10-minute episodes from writer Hornby ("Brooklyn," "An Education") and director Stephen Frears ("The Queen," "A Very English Scandal") casts Brendan Gleeson ("In Bruges") and Patricia Clarkson ("Sharp Objects") as Scott and Ellen, a Connecticut couple married more than 30 years who are growing apart. So the liberal Ellen drags Scott, a self-made man with traditional values, to marriage counseling above a hipster coffee shop, where they gather beforehand, collect their thoughts and argue about a range of subjects. Along the way, the past is dredged up, old grievances are aired and slowly the couple begin to realize what has gone wrong in their marriage. The dialogue-heavy 100 minutes of drama was shot over 12 days on a set in London. It was an ambitious schedule for Clarkson, who nonetheless jumped at the chance to play opposite Gleeson, who she calls a "dreamboat," and say the words of the Emmy- winning and Oscar-nominated Hornby. "Nick Hornby is not your average writer," Clarkson asserts. "He is a man of words, stunning words. He's not someone you're going to fudge or improv. He is someone you must be deeply committed, you must be diligent because the words are so flawless. They are exquisite and they work beautifully, and when you say them in their entirety, there's a certain rhythm to them and a certain comfort in them and intelligence." In Ellen, Clarkson occupies the skin of someone she calls a "lovely woman" who becomes dissatisfied with her conventional suburban existence, which clashes sharply with Gleeson's staid, perfectly content Scott. And that's only the tip of the iceberg. "She's a very present woman," Clarkson says of Ellen. "And I think she finds herself slowly moving past this kind of particular life she's found herself in. And not that it was bad, it's just she's suddenly yearning for something else. ... And I think she's headed for a spiritual awakening, which I think a lot of women and men (are) reaching for something different than what surrounds them. And that starts to bring (conflict) because I think (Scott) is quite settled in his life and very happy with the life he has."
