February 13 - 19, 2022 • Terre Haute Tribune-Star • 19 tastytv BY GEORGE DICKIE Have a byte – cooking apps you can download right now It goes without saying that we all can get bored eating our own cooking day in and day out. And especially in winter and the isolation of the pandemic, that distaste can turn to outright dissatisfaction. Luckily, there is a wealth of foodie knowledge to be had that's only as far away as your cellphone. As more and more apps appear online every day, the culinary thrillseeker has never had more resources from which to draw in their never-ending search for meal ideas that excite the palate. The following are a few of the ones worth checking out. Tasty: From digital content creator BuzzFeed comes this app it calls "your new cooking coach," offering up more than 4,000 recipes and cooking videos along with features such as a step-by-step instruction mode, a "My Recipes" page where users can store their favorite recipes and a search function that allows users to search by ingredients, cuisine or social occasion. It's handy and free but available only for iPhone and iPad. Recipes by Cook'n: This oldie but goodie (it was created in 1992 by a starving college student) uses artificial intelligence to identify a user's personal taste preferences and recommend recipes that are a match. It also has a recipe keeper that organizes favorite recipes, functions that allows users to add recipes via dictation or taking a photo of the recipe and the ability to import recipes from Pinterest. Plus a whole lot more. It's free and available for iPhone and iPad. NYT Cooking: Fans of The New York Times food section will want to check out this ad-supported app for Android, iPhone and iPad that allows users to search and save more than 19,000 recipes from its pages, featuring beautiful photography, and easy-to- follow instructions. It also has monthly outstanding recipe recommendations. MyFridgeFood: The title says it all. With this unique and quite useful app, a user can input all the ingredients they have in their kitchen and then the app will make recipe recommendations based on that data. The user can then click on the recipe and get cooking details. The app itself is free and available on Android, iPhone and iPad though users will have to buy a subscription. Allrecipes Dinner Spinner: Crowdsourcing is behind this ad-supported app for iPhone and iPad, which offers up recipes, reviews and videos from Allrecipes community members. There are also personalized recommendations, a customizable search function and the abilities to save favorite recipes and create shopping lists.
