Gibson Southern jumped out to a 17-7 lead at the end of the first quarter of play and never looked back. The Lady Titans took a 34- 24 advantage over the Lady Wildcats to the locker room at the half intermission, and at the end of three periods of play, the visitors' lead was 49 - 31. GSHS outscored the hosts 16 -13 in the final eight-minute stanza to account for the final 65 -44 margin of victory. Sophomore Chloey Gra- ham led the winners in scor- ing with 16 points on six of 10 shooting from the floor, in- cluding two of three from be- hind the three-point line and a perfect two of two from the free throw line. Freshman Gabby Spink was close behind with 13 counters in the contest, while 5'10" ju- nior Alexis Tucker put home nine markers, hitting on four of eight field goal tries. Tuck- er led Gibson in rebounding, hauling in eight errant shots. Junior Ava Weisheit added seven points to the Lady Titan side of the scoring ledger, and senior Taylor Hart and sopho- more Ally Malone each netted six tallies for the winners in a very balanced scoring attack by the winners. In addition to Tucker's nine caroms, Weisheit grabbed eight missed shots and Hart pulled in six rebounds. Gibson Southern handed out 14 assists in the outing, led by Spink with five. Senior Alex Holmes and freshman Nola Ravellette both drilled three-point baskets for three points, and senior Loren Stoll added a two-point basket to close out the scoring for the Lady Titans and account for the 65 points put through the iron by the winners. Emma Schipp, a 5'10" sophomore, was the only La- dy Wildcat to score in double digits. She scored 17 points on five of nine shooting from the floor, including one of one from beyond the three-point line, and six of seven from the unguarded stripe. The only blemish on the evening's performance for Gibson Southern was at the charity stripe, where the La- dy Titans were just five of 14 (36 percent). The win upped Gibson Southern to 10 -5 on the 2021- 22 season overall and 7-0 in the Pocket Athletic Confer- ence (PAC). The Lady Titans played at Tecumseh on Thursday and hosted Washington on Satur- day. Lady Titans claim double overtime victory vs. Washington By Mike Sandifar SG Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com The final score was Wash- ington 81, Gibson Southern 75 in two overtimes, but that does not tell the story. It was a game that movies are made of—two teams that are undefeated in conference play, meeting for what every- one believes will be for the league championship, and it took place in Titan Fieldhouse Saturday when the Washing- ton Lady Hatchets visited the host Lady Titans for what had to be the best high school bas- ketball game played in Indi- ana. The game had all the excite- ment, drama and heartbreak of any movie that could be pro- duced in Hollywood. The Lady Hatchets came out of the gate ready to play and raced to a quick 7-0 ad- vantage, and Gibson Southern Coach Kyle Brasher called a time out in an attempt to stop the early bleeding by his team. The time out worked, as the Lady Titans scored the next seven points to knot the score at 7-7. Washington outscored Gib- son Southern 10 -5 the rest of the first quarter to take a 17-12 advantage to the sidelines af- ter eight minutes of play. The two Pocket Athletic Conference (PAC) teams bat- tled to a stand still in the sec- ond stanza, as each team put home 16 points to give the La- dy Hatchets a 33-28 lead at the halftime intermission. Gibson Southern outscored Washington 20 -15 in the third period of play, making the score 48 -48 after 24 minutes of hard-fought, intense bas- ketball. The two teams battled back and forth the first four min- utes of the fourth quarter, with neither team seemingly able to get more than a two-point or four-point difference in the score; however, when 5.10" ju- nior Alexis Tucker scored on a post-up move to put the hosts up 57-51 with 3:45 remaining on the scoreboard clocks, it looked as if the Lady Titans might be in control—but, this was not a home team made movie, and the Lady Hatchets scored the next 12 of the next 18 points to knot at 63-63 left in regulation on a two-point basket by Washington senior guard Jesse Ledgerwood with 24.2 seconds left in regulation. That gave the ball back to Gibson Southern, and the La- dy Titans handled the Wash- ington full-court pressure de- fense with ease and brought the basketball into the hosts' end of the playing floor. The Lady Titans quickly moved the basketball, as they looked for an opening in the Lady Hatchet defense, and with 15.2 seconds left, they found Tucker posting up on the block. With just 13.6 ticks showing on the clock, the Lady Hatch- ets fouled Tucker as she at- tempted a shot from inside the paint. Tucker missed both free throw opportunities to give the visitors the final try for victory in regulation. The Lady Hatchets called a time out to set up the final play in regulation. Gibson Southern had com- mitted only five fouls in the second half at that point, and in the Lady Titan huddle during that time out, Brasher told his team to "go for a steal after the Hatcher ball handler took her first dribble after crossing the 10 -second line." The Lady Titans did just that, and with 7.9 seconds showing on the scoreboard clock, Gibson Southern com- mitted a foul to stop the clock and give the ball back to Wash- ington at half court—and giv- ing the hosts a chance to re- set their defense. The defensive strategy worked to perfection, as af- ter getting the ball in at half court, the Lady Hatchet guard took four dribbles and passed the ball to Ledgerwood in the left corner. Ledgerwood had little time, and her quickly put up shot fell short as the horn sounded to end regulation play at 63-63. The first overtime was more of the same by both basketball teams—neither team gave anything to the other team, on either end of the floor. Both teams scored seven points in the first extra peri- od, and the teams headed to the sidelines with the score knotted at 70 -70. Washington scored the first four points in the second ex- tra, and the Lady Hatchets never relinquished the lead. Ava Weisheit scored on a driving lay up with 1:21 left in the game to get Gibson South- ern within two at 74-72, and the 5'9" junior was fouled on the play; however, she missed the free throw. The Lady Hatchets last sev- en points came at the charity stripe, where they connected on seven of eight opportuni- ties over the final 1:20. Weisheit put home one of two free throws with 1:10 re- maining in the game, and 5'9" freshman Gabby Spink nailed a three-point shot with 6.2 sec- onds left in the game to close out the scoring for Gibson Southern. Ledgerwood tossed in two charity tries with 3.2 seconds left to close out all scoring in the contest at 81-75. It was a tough loss for the Lady Titans, but it will be a long time before fans from either team see a basketball game like Saturday's battle in Titan Fieldhouse. It was a game for the ages. Spink led all scorers in the game with 33 points, includ- ing a school record nine three- point field goals (on just 12 at- tempts). She was three of six from two-point range and a perfect two of two from the charity stripe. Weisheit and Graham each put home 14 counters in the contest for Gibson Southern, and Tucker added another 11 markers to close out the dou- ble-digit scoring for the hosts. Sophomore Ally Malone scored three points on a three- point basket to account for the Lady Titans' 75 points. The Lady Hatchets also had a trio of double figure scorers in the game, led by Kencia Le- vasseur with 29 points and fol- lowed by Ledgerwood with 25 and Alaina Thorne with 16. All are seniors. In an extremely well-played outing by both teams, both the Lady Titans and the Lady Hatchets committed just 10 turnovers each in the 40 -min- ute, double overtime event— an unbelievable statistic in a high school basketball game, especially one played as hard and physical on both ends of the floor as this encounter was for the entire 40 minutes. Tucker led all rebounders in the fray, pulling in 12 missed shots. Weisheit grabbed an- other seven errant tries at the basket for Gibson Southern. Levasseur was the top re- bounder for the Lady Hatch- ets with 11 caroms. For the game, the Lady Ti- tans connected on 26 of 51 field goal attempts (50.9 per- cent), including 13 of 26 from behind the three-point line (50.0 percent). Gibson South- ern managed to put home just 10 of 21 free throw opportuni- ties (47.6 percent) and, with- out question, that cost the hosts the game. The Lady Hatchets tossed in 28 of 54 field goal tries (51.8 percent), including five of sev- en from beyond the three- point arc (71.4 percent). From the charity stripe, Washington was 19 of 23 (82.6 percent), and the visitors made eight of nine in the second overtime period, including their last six in the final 1:16 of the game— all the difference in the bas- ketball game. The Lady Titans outscored the Lady Hatchets 65 -61 from the floor, but they could not overcome the 19 -23 free throw shooting by Washington with 10 of 21 shooting from the un- guarded stripe. The win put Washington at 17-3 overall and 9 -0 in league contests on the season. Now 11-6 overall and 7-1 in conference action, Gibson Southern does not have any time to lament the loss, as they played host to Mt. Vernon in a PAC match up in Titan Field- house last night. They host an- other PAC opponent tonight at home when Heritage Hills comes calling, and on Thurs- day, the Lady Titans will host Southridge in the final PAC outing of the year. Titan Jake Richter jets down the pool swimming freestyle during the Gibson Southern tri-meet against Pike Central and Northeast Dubois on Monday, Jan. 10 at Pike Central. Gibson Southern's Gabby Spink (15), a 5'9" freshman fights her way to the bas- ket for two of her game-high 33 points in Saturday's heart-breaking 81-75 double overtime Pocket Athletic Conference (PAC) loss to Washington in Titan Fieldhouse.
