Johnny Depp had one of his most popular and widely accessible roles to date as Captain Jack Sparrow, who's put to the test when his enemy Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) steals his ship and then abducts a governor's daughter (Keira Knightley). Her longtime friend (Orlando Bloom) joins forces with Sparrow on a rescue mission, but there's something otherworldly about the villain and his gang that ups the stakes considerably for the heroes. Jack Davenport, Jonathan Pryce and Zoe Saldana also are in the 2003 film, which yielded four sequels – and more of those remain under discussion. ››› (PG-13: AS, V) "AMERICAN VETERAN" Recently televised by PBS, this documentary miniseries examines the experiences of various military veterans, from those who served in World War II up to much more odern conflicts. The program shows how being at the battlefront can change people, and what that can mean upon their return home after serving the country ... and not only for them, but also for their loved ones, who sometimes have to deal with aftereffects as well. Acceptance isn't guaranteed, as many returning veterans have found, and that is a major theme of the show. The hosts of the four episodes – Drew Carey, Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), Wes Studi and J.R. Martinez – are veterans themselves. ›››› (Not rated: AS, P) "ZEROS AND ONES" Noted action filmmaker Abel Ferrara ("Bad Lieutenant") wrote and directed this tale of a shadowy military operative – played by Ethan Hawke – who goes to Rome, where he becomes involved in a plot involving a potential attack on The Vatican. At the same time, he has plenty of personal concerns, not the least of which ic the mystery of what happened to his twin brother (and yes, Hawke gets to play dual roles in the tale). Though the rest of the cast is made up largely of relative unknowns, Ferrara does feature his wife (Cristina Chiriac) and daughter (Anna Ferrera). ››› (R: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray, Digital and On Demand) "IDA RED" The title of this melodrama actually is the name of one of its chief characters, played by Oscar winner Melissa Leo ("The Fighter"). She's an incarcerated criminal whose ability to get out of prison rests with her being able to stage a heist from behind bars, and she has to rely principally on her son (Josh Hartnett) to do what's required on the outside. He's not sure he can go through with it, though, especially when the FBi gets wind of what's up ... so he has some big decisions to make. William Forsythe, Deborah Ann Woll and Frank Grillo ("Billions") also appear. ›› (R: AS, P, V) (Also on Digital and On Demand) "SAND DOLLAR COVE" In this charming and quite scenic Hallmark Channel attraction, Aly Michalka plays a developer sent to the title Connecticut town to get the rights to a beachfront property. She meets with initial resistance from the site's owner ("One Tree Hill" alum Chad Michael Murray), but in true Hallmark fashion, they eventually fall for each other ... though, also in Hallmark form, that may not resolve all their differences. Clare Bowen also stars. ››› (Not rated: AS ) "ANTLERS" The fearsome legend of the wendigo gets a new workout in this thriller, produced by Guillermo del Toro (among others) and directed by Scott Cooper ("Crazy Heart"). An Oregon teacher (played by Keri Russell) becomes aware that one of her students (Jeremy T. Thomas) is keeping the supernatural creature at home, where he has his infected father and younger brother (Scott Haze, Sawyer Jones) locked up with it. The teacher implores her brother, the local sheriff (Jesse Plemons, "Fargo"), to look into the situation ... and matters only get worse from there. Graham Greene, Rory Cochrane and Amy Madigan also appear. DVD extras: six "making-of" documentaries; Comic- Con@Home featurette. ››› (R:AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray, Digital and On Demand) Jeremy T. Thomas in "Antlers" "I'm a mom, and that comes first, and then the other things like acting and producing and directing are how I play and relax. 'Mom-ing' is my real job." – Ashley Williams, seen recently in "Sister Swap: A Hometown Holiday" and "Sister Swap: Christmas in the City" on Hallmark Channel " c o p a 'M – r H " i C "It's an investment for sure, financially and commitment-wise.
