Poplar Street, Petersburg By Matthew Haycraft The Lady Chargers varsity and junior varsity basketball teams split wins for this week, while playing Vincennes Lin- coln and Wood Memorial. In the Vincennes Lincoln game on Tuesday, Nov. 16, the Lady Chargers' varsity team hit the hardwood ready to play and take down the Al- ices, scoring 15 points in the first quarter. But by the end of the first half, the Lady Char- gers seemed to start to lose steam in their scoring. Pres- sure from the Alices and too many turnovers lead to Pike Central being down by sev- en points at the beginning of the fourth quarter. The Lady Chargers were unable to hold and put together the points to defeat the Alices, losing by a score of 55 -40. Coach Kyle McCutchan said, "The second quarter, we struggled with their pres- sure and committed too many turnovers, and allowed them to jump ahead. We battled throughout and were down seven in the fourth, but we couldn't make enough plays and Vincennes capitalized on our mistakes. I was very hap- py with our overall effort." The junior varsity Lady Chargers ended up losing to the Alices as well by a score of 42-17. They were able to get through and score some points, but were unable to put together the points to catch up or keep up with the Alices. Both teams went on to play the Wood Memorial Trojans on Friday, Nov. 19 at Wood Memorial. The varsity Lady Chargers were able to score four more points than the Lady Trojans and win the game by a score of 39 -35. In the first half of the game, Pike Central was in the lead by one point, after com- ing out hot in the first quarter of the game. During the sec- ond half of the game, the La- dy Chargers made nearly all their points in free throws due to fouling by Wood Memorial. "(It) was not the prettiest game ever played, but our group played with a lot of grit and toughness, and we found a way to pull out the win. We only gave up two points in the fourth quarter and that was the key to the victory," said Coach McCutchan. The Pike Central junior var- sity also took the win against Wood Memorial by a score of 12-8. The Lady Chargers ju- nior varsity team only played two quarters against the Tro- jans due to a lot of Wood Me- morial's players being on both JV and varsity teams. Pike Central lead in the points with a good start in the first quarter of the game, scoring a total of eight points and only allowing for the Tro- jans to score six. They con- tinued their fight during the second and final quarter of the game. The Trojans scored two more points, but due to fouling by Wood Memorial, the Lady Chargers pulled ahead for the win with two free throws made by Anna Whitehead at the very end of the game.
