The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, November 24, 2021 A-7 OBITUARIES Submit obituaries: Call: 812-354-8500 Email: obits@pressdispatch.net or bring in a hard copy: 820 E. Poplar Street, Petersburg Deadline: 5 p.m. on Monday By Alex Mahrenholz Agriculture and Natural Resources/ 4-H Youth Development Extension Educator As many families across the country return to traditional Thanksgiving meals this year, they can expect to spend about 14 percent more than they did in 2020. The American Farm Bureau Federation's 36th an- nual survey found the average cost of this year's Thanksgiv- ing feast for 10 has risen to $53.31, a $ 6.41 increase from last year's average of $46.90. In Indiana, that total is a lit- tle lower than the national av- erage, coming in at $53.38 for 2021. "There is no question that this has been a tough year," said Isabella Chism, INFB 2nd vice president. "Coming off the heels of the pandemic, widespread supply chain is- sues are pushing prices higher and the economy is stretched. This year's Thanksgiving mar- ket basket reflects what Hoo- siers are seeing when they go to their local grocery stores. However, the increased price of Thanksgiving dinner in In- diana is comparable to costs across the rest of the country." The centerpiece of most Thanksgiving dinners -the turkey- costs approximately $23.99 for a 16 -pound bird, or $1.50 per pound, which is a 24 percent increase from last year. Farm Bureau "volunteer shoppers" across the coun- try checked prices Oct. 26 to Nov. 8, about two weeks be- fore most grocery stores be- gan featuring everyone's fa- vorite holiday bird at distinct- ly lower prices. Although the survey timeline is consistent with past AFBF Thanksgiv- ing surveys, 2021 brought some unique differences. Ac- cording to USDA Agricultural Marketing Service data, gro- cery stores began advertising lower feature prices later than usual this year. Also, the av- erage per-pound feature price for whole frozen turkeys was $1.07 the week of Nov. 5 -11 and 88 cents the week of Nov. 12-18, a decline of 18 percent in just one week. This means consumers who have not yet purchased a turkey should be able to find one at a lower cost than the Farm Bureau aver- age.
