JULY 2013 HOMES PLUS 10 Yard containment factors in keeping your pet safe HOMES PLUS CORRESPONDENT WAUKESHA – It is estimated that more than 1 million dogs are hit by cars in this country each year, and another 60,000 are lost or stolen. Jay Gergens, owner of Hidden Fence of Wisconsin, said he offers customers a safe and effective way to contain their pet due to local restrictions or aesthetics; sometimes traditional fencing isn't an option. "Our systems will enclose the entire yard versus back only with traditional fencing for areas as large as 200 acres," he said. Gergens said people choose invisible fencing for their pets for many reasons, but mostly for safety, exercise and convenience. "Many of our customers' dogs are outside for several hours each day and their days are spent playing with the kids, moving about the yard, or just napping," he said. Gergens said for several years he has recommended the "light hands" approach of training dogs to an electronic pet fence. The idea is to start with a very light, almost unperceivable correction. "By starting light, you're not going to create stress," he said. "Dogs can't learn when they're stressed, so the warning tone combined with just a light tickle allows you to move freely about the yard and approach the boundary." Gergens said as the pet approaches the boundary, the collar will beep, then deliver a light tickle. "At this point, we bring the dog back into the safe area," he said. "This is the beginning of the conditioned response that we're looking for." Gergens said the system offers multiple frequencies, thousands of settings and several collar choices. "We can tailor the system to meet the needs of any size and breed of dog," he said. "By offering multiple correction levels, we're able to train even the most sensitive dogs without creating stress." Gergens said after a customer has contacted the business, a quote is given via email, phone or in person depending on the property and the customer's familiarity with fencing and containment systems. "Oftentimes, there will be several of our fences on a block, so the customer is comfortable with us, and we're familiar with the neighborhood," he said. Gergens said on the day of installation, the installers would walk the property to determine the best layout.
