JULY 2013 HOMES PLUS 3 Photos courtesy of Lemke Stone Inc. Left: Natural stone offers a perfect setting for a waterfall, an increasingly popular feature in backyards around the area. "It's like an extension of their home." Lemke said the use of stone in water features such as waterfalls and ponds is very popular. Neither Eden Stone nor Lemke Stone installs the rock, but they will give advice to those who will do it themselves. Or, even if they are hiring a professional to install the stone feature, Lemke employees will offer options for the homeowner, suggesting different colors of stone, sizes of stone or even the type of stone itself. "A lot of people will bring in pictures of their homes and want to match colors. Others will bring in pictures of other work and want to copy it," Lemke said. "Even when it comes to installing it, they might print out something from the Internet and ask about it." Of course, in Wisconsin, lannon stone remains popular for a variety of reasons. It is so abundant that it often costs less than stone imported from other parts of the country. Also, in many cases, it might be used in one part of the home, and the new project is being done to match what is already there. On the other hand, because lannon is so popular, some homeowners want something different, such as New York blue (green-blue, rust-blue, lavender, blue), desert sand (light yellow, light green with streaks of gold), Tennessee Jamestown (range of rust or orange, with a dimpled texture) or black granite boulders (black with a mix of white, orange, pink, cream and red). Lannon stone, like other stone, can be used for many types of projects; it's just a matter of how it is cut and produced. "Stone that are 1 to 2 inches thick, what we call flagstones, are good for patios and walkways," Lemke said. "Thicker stones, those 3 to 5 inches thick or even 5 to 8 inches thick, are good for retaining walls and outcropping walls. Cobblestones are good for flower beds, and boulders are good for retaining walls." Unlike a few decades ago when few seemed to be concerned about the environment, today's use of natural stone is a perfect use of a product with a small environmental footprint. It takes less energy to produce, and because so much of it is taken right from Wisconsin, the cost to transfer it from quarry to backyard is minimal, compared to some other products. Ironically, because the stone from Wisconsin is among the best in the nation, Fahser said companies ship plenty of it around the country. "The durability and strength of it can't be beat," he said.
