1918: Aer the plat for the huge sawmill called
Woodmere was recorded, operation started in 1919. But
by 1923, production had ceased. In 1930, the buildings
burned and it was as if the self-contained community of
over 1,500 never existed. Some workers stayed on in En-
glewood with descendants still here. e mill was located
where Waste Management is today on State Road 776
toward Venice.
1922: Englewood got it's first sizable school. It was on
West Dearborn Street at the corner of Elm.
1924: e Royal Casino was built the end of Buchan's
Landing long pier. It offered dining, drinking, dancing
and gambling. But the gaiety was short lived, due to the
stock market crash.
