JULY 2013 Freeman Brookfield & Elm Grove • Page 7A WIAA STATE INDIVIDUAL TENNIS TOURNAMENT Brookfield's Hollowell Player of the Year for Classic 8 lacrosse East's Felix Corwin wins title Junior tops Niquet in final BROOKFIELD – Senior Morgan Hollowell of the Brookfield co-op girls lacrosse team was selected the Classic 8 Conference Player of the Year. Arrowhead Red had five players selected to the first team: senior attack Emily Zadny, senior midfielder Roby Wittkopf, sophomore midfielder August Jepsen and senior defenders Elle Lichte and Laurel Weimar. Mukwonago junior midfielder Megan Schallock and junior attack Phoebe LeRoy, Kettle Moraine junior defender Katie Brueske and Oconomowoc junior goalie Anna Maynard were also first-team selections. By Mark Hutchinson Freeman Staff MADISON – Junior Felix Corwin has grown two inches in the past year. And the Brookfield East High School junior loomed large during the WIAA Division 1 State Boys Individual Tennis Tournament. Corwin, the top seed in the singles bracket, defeated Marquette senior Damon Niquet from Nashotah 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-1 in the singles championship match at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium. Niquet beat Corwin in last year's championship match, but this year's result wasn't a surprise – Corwin had beaten Niquet three times this season coming into the tournament and was seeded No. 1 while Niquet had a No. 2 seed. East coach Linda Lied has seen Corwin's physical growth help his game, but she is optimistic about his title prospects for another reason. "The biggest difference for Felix is confidence," Lied said. "He's got that confidence that 'I can do this.' He's not nervous or uptight. His game is solid. He can usually dictate the game, and if he sees something that his opponent is doing, he's got enough savvy to change up and attack. "He has beaten Damon Niquet three times this year. I think the big thing last year was Felix didn't really believe he could beat him. This year, he knows he can. But our mantra to the boys is to never assume anything and always respect your opponent." Corwin's brother, Tim, a Brookfield East senior, entered the tourney seeded sixth. He reached the quarterfinals before falling. "Felix and I are each other's biggest rivals, but also each other's biggest fans," Tim Corwin said. "We're so close in age that we've always played together. "I know him better than anyone else. I'm not all that surprised by how well he's done this season. He's a very driven kid who has always strived to do as well as possible. This year, he's just been better than everyone. He just keeps winning matches." Felix has enjoyed Tim's presence both as a brother and teammate. "Growing up, my brother and I have had it easy because we don't have to call another kid up if we want to play," Felix said. "We just call across the house. We play quite a bit. Ever since our childhood, we've been pretty even." Tim has actually kept score. "We're 5-5 against each other." Lied said the Corwins have filled their roles as teammates well. "Last year, Felix and Tim were somewhat interchangeable," she said. "Felix had made a bit of a step up, so we played Felix at one. Tim was fine with that and handled it with grace. This year, it was never even discussed. Everyone knew Felix was going to play the one and he has gone his job in a quiet, focused way . "Tim is very different. He's also focused, but he shows more emotion on the court and is always looking out for his brother and his other teammates. He's been a great leader, and he will definitely be missed next season." Felix considered himself well prepared for his title run. "In the last year, I've been hitting a lot with my brother and Erick Martinez, who was an assistant coach at Marquette University a few years ago," he said. "Then our head coach's son, Drew Lied, who plays at Michigan State, came back and has been drilling with us recently That's been . really good for me, too."
