Thomas Balistreri and his brother started out selling fruits, vegetables and produce from a horse drawn carriage in the 1920's. In 1949 Thomas Balistreri purchased his third property on Silver Spring in Whitefish Bay. He used this third property to open his third Sendik's. Sendik's, as the years went by the business began to grow by leaps and bounds. Finally in 1975, they expanded the Food Market to a full service grocery store. Even though they have many vendors they say they have "the best vendors, no questions about it!" Many of their produce vendors have been with them for generations. They have built a lot of trust in each other over all these years. This enables them to get high quality product from field to market very quickly. One thing I found very interesting is that they put most of their produce in nightly. They take the products and put them in a walk-in refrigerator every night. In the morning, they take the produce out and cull, trim and clean it before they put it back on the shelf.
