For starters, the elec- tion has been moved from the first Tuesday in May to the first Tuesday in June. Voters are being encour- aged to vote by mail. The deadline to request a mail ballot application and re- turn it to the Clerk's Office is May 21. People can do that by calling 812-354-6025. To date, there have been 404 applications requested. Election Clerk Jenny Deffen- doll said they have sent out 299 ballots and received 95 back. The last day to apply for a mail in absentee ballot is May 21. Clerk's Office is sched- uled for only one week be- ginning May 26. It will run through June 1. There is officially one race on each of the Democrat and Republican ballots. Howev- er, the one race on the Dem- ocrat ticket is for US Presi- dent. Joe Biden has already unofficially been declared the winner of the Democrat nomination, but several can- didates remain on the ballot, because they didn't meet the deadline to withdraw. On the Republican side, the one race is for the State Representative 75 District nomination. The candidates are Cindy Ledbetter and Mi- chael Griffin. They are vy- ing to see who faces Demo- crat John Hurley. District 75 is an open seat this year as multi-term incumbent Ron Bacon announced he is not seeking re-election. The primary Election Day is set for June 2. Voters can vote in any of three voting centers regardless of where they live. Those centers are expected to be The Otwell Community Center, Gospel Center Church in Peters- burg and the Winslow Com- munity Center. The other option is to vote early in person at the Pike County's Clerk's Office. This option is usually avail- able for a month prior to the election. This year it will on- ly be from May 26 to June 1 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m on Mon- day through Friday, then on Saturday, May 30 from 8 a.m. to noon and again on Monday, June 1 from 8 a.m. to noon. Salvation Army packs 5,000 food boxes The Salvation Army, in collaboration with Midwest Food Bank, packed 5,000 boxes of food on Tuesday, May 12 at Lucas Oil Stadi- um to help Hoosier families in need. The stadium, which is the home of the Indianap- olis Colts, has been used as a food warehouse and food box packing center as part of the COVID-19 disaster re- sponse in Indiana. In April, 10,000 food box- es were packed at the stadi- um and distributed to food pantries across the state. With many communities are seeing a rise in families seeking food assistance, The Salvation Army is us- ing funds from a recent Lil- ly Endowment grant to pur- chase enough food to fill an- other 5,000 boxes. This week, new shipments of food boxes are slated to revisit hard-hit communities like New Albany, Columbus, Evansville, Greenwood and Fort Wayne. Several rural counties, including Miami County, Fayette County and Clinton County, are also re- ceiving food boxes to assist with local feeding programs. The food boxes will be filled with shelf-stable items de- signed to help supplement the pantries of families who are struggling due to CO- VID-19 shut-downs. MREs (Meals Ready to Eat) pro- vided by FEMA will be add- ed to these boxes for emer- gency provisions in the com- ing weeks. As more businesses re- open, The Salvation Army will shift its focus from food to financial aid. Food pan- tries and feeding programs will continue to operate, just as they did before the COVID-19 crisis, but ma- ny households are facing a new crisis with unpaid bills threatening the loss of their homes. The Salvation Ar- my is prepared to help these Hoosiers close this critical income gap and regain sta- bility post-COVID-19. View and download images of the April packing and distribu- tion of 10,000 food boxes on Flicker. Volunteers from Midwest Food Bank and The Sal- vation Army will work side-by-side with Lucas Oil Stadium staff and Indiana National Guard mem- bers to fill and prepare for distribution the food boxes on Tuesday. Two Men and A Truck is once again stepping up and will start distributing the boxes to food pantries on Wednesday. Offices from across Indiana have already used their fleet of mov- ing trucks to distribute thousands of food boxes to communities spanning the entire state, including Fort Wayne, Columbus, New Albany, Terre Haute, Logansport, Warsaw, Nashville, Vincennes, New Castle, Huntington, Madison, Evansville, Marion, Greenwood and Indianapolis.
