Postcard # 664 has sailboats on the ocean, with a white sandy beach, a green forest of trees and a building with red and white awnings. It has chil- dren with balloons, a merry-go-round, trampoline, white iron chairs and ta- ble, flowers in boxes under the win- dow, a white picket fence and a drive- way with an old truck that says "Sun- dae School Ice Cream" on the side. The back reads, "Greetings from Cape Cod! Barb and Norm, this is quite the place to vis- it for ice cream. There are approximately 15 -20 young people who work the window and ice cream bar. The many workers make the lines move fast. The back of their shirts say, 'Don't Skip Sundae School! ' There are so many cars, they have to direct traffic in the parking lot and along the street. The inside walls are wood lined and there are vintage ice cream uten- sils displayed in a case. This place is full of happiness and ice cream. Love, the Poehlein family, Greg, Lisa, Lin- coln, Samantha, Levi and Taylor." Thanks to all the Poehlein family for postcard # 664 of the Sundae School ice cream at Cape Cod. We thought, "that was a long way to go to have ice cream." We also heard they went there almost everyday and it's always crowd- ed. Winslow Patoka River hasn't risen, but we did get some rain overnight on Monday, August 12, with lots of light- ning, one right after another, then for about 15 minutes on Wednesday eve- ning, we had rain with wind. The temp has been in the 90s, with a tropical heat humidity of 100 -105, for about three days, then it dropped into the muggy range. It is supposed to get hot and hu- mid again in the 90s over the weekend and part of the coming week. The wet washcloth may be needed if you plan to be outside. Speaking of outside, Norm saw a grey squirrel in the yard and we usu- ally have brown ones. He said it looks healthy, so they are getting the food they need. Norm also saw a spotted fawn outside the kitchen window, and Mom and I saw it also as it mosied through the yard with its white tail up. There wasn't any mom, dad or sib- lings around, just the fawn. He wasn't small like a newborn, but he looked like a youngster before his spots go away. He was so breathtaking that I didn't even think of taking a picture. Shame on me. Norm and I watched the W VUT special of Woodstock: Fifty Years Ago. Woodstock took place on August 15, 16, and 17, 1969, and the special cov- ered the months before and the stuff they had to endure to put this peace- ful event of music on. Then the crowd of people who attended and how they got the musical groups into this area to play was fascinating. Wow, what an awesome event. I guess you all read about Steve Nel- son becoming our new Winslow town marshal and Michael McGregor as our new deputy starting August 17. Congrats to both guys and we all hope the very best of days as you help to keep the Winslow citizens safe. We also heard at the Town Hall meeting that Na- than DeWeese is now street superintendent, so congrats on your promotion. Sunday, August 11 was the 78th John and Mary Poehlein reunion with all the 75 fam- ily members in attendance. From the eight children, we have at least six generations. We had a table full of de- licious tasting food and the desserts covered another table, plus we had sev- eral soft drinks to choose from. Our re- union started off with Greg Poehlein reading our minutes and announce- ments, and then Stan Poehlein said the prayer to start the line to eat and enjoy the fellowship of family. There was a big vase of colorful roses and ba- by's breath given to Janice Sucech in appreciation of her help through the years. At the sign-in table, there was a fish bowl of shells, all different siz- es, to guess how many were there. Eva Willis won by guessing 500 and there were 504 shells. Oh yes, our theme was "Under the Sea, Mermaid," where a fishing area was set up and several kids caught their fish in the big, blue sea. I even caught a clown fish. Yes, the big kids got to fish later on. All the youngsters got a bag of gummies and a shark fin suckers. The tables had shells, cray- ons and coloring pages, a fishbowl of shells, and stickers. Abi Popp wore her mermaid dress and shoes and made a picture from stickers at the table next to Mom, Mildred and Terri Ann. Deby colored their pictures. Sometimes, we have an auction and this year, we had a small one with our auctioneer Greg. The items bought builds up our "kit- ty" and some of Aunt Mildred Ashby's paintings were bought. I bid on some but got a clothes pin clown, a jar of pear butter and a chicken dog chew. Everyone there on that hot day had a really great time in the air condi- tioned room as we talked, laughed, ate and just plain had a fun time with family. Next year, our theme for Sunday, August 9, 2020, will be "The Roaring Twenties" and we hope to see you there for more family fun at the Community Center in Winslow. Steve Nelson's last day as a town worker was Friday, August 16, so Norm decided to give him a cake that was decorated with balloons and said, "Go Get 'Em, Marshal." I guess it's time to dim the lights on this week's ramblings, but keep an eye on family and friends since it is hot and humid, slow down and see all the wonders all around your area, stop for school buses. Then, always smile, wave and say hi to ev- eryone you see this week.
