By Catherine Jozwik Special to Waukesha County Home Wisconsin's recent erratic weather — chilly one day and warm the next — may have gar- deners waiting to begin planting perennials, herbs and vegetables. However, professionals agree that now is a good time to start. "As far as perennials go, you can plant May through September, as long as your ground is workable and the soil is dry and crumbly," said Shelly Garbe, owner of Shady Acres Perennial Nursery, 5725 S. Martin Road, New Berlin. The nursery grows and sells its own plant materials. Although business was slow- going for area plant centers and nurseries at first, things have since picked up. "We did see a delay this year because of the weather," said Heather Littlefield, store manager of Stein's Gardens and Gifts Waukesha location, 2220 E. More- land Blvd. Although early June's increased sunshine and warmer tempera- tures have helped usher more cus- tomers into the store, Littlefield noted that, save for a few types of tomato plants, Stein's still has plenty of plants in stock, from herbs and vegetables to perennials, annuals and hanging plants to gar- dening tools and accessories. "We have a little bit of everything," she said. Littlefield feels that, despite weather uncertainties, homeown- ers can focus on landscaping. "It's always a good time to plant trees and shrubs," she said. Garbe opened Shady Acres for the season in mid-April. Initially, gardeners were hesitant to pur- chase plants, given the colder weather.
