"People were waiting for the frost potential to pass," she said. "When the sun is out, people come." Some gardeners prefer to avoid the crowds and shop during rainy days. Popular perennials to plant include coral bells, hostas and echi- nacea, commonly known as coneflowers. Gardeners also seek plants that attract pollinating insects, such as bees and butterflies, and hummingbirds. For example, caterpillars are drawn to milkweed, violets and asters; butterflies flock to goldenrod and ironweed. "People are very interested in planting milkweed," Garbe said. Bees prefer plants in the mint family, like salvia and catmint, while hummingbirds flock to bright red flowers such as trumpet vine. Karen Jorgensen-Matt, who co- owns Plant Land, 6204 S. Howell Ave., Milwaukee, with her brother, Mark Jorgensen, said many cus- tomers, who generally plant veg- etable gardens by Memorial Day, have held off on planting until very recently, due to the weather. With a combination of more sun and warmer temperatures, less hardy plants, among them basil and cucumbers, are selling well. Jorgensen-Matt advises gardeners to not worry about planting timelines. "Don't go according to the calendar. Go according to the weather," she said, adding that full sun and good soil are keys to a successful planting season. Meanwhile, Garbe believes this month is ideal for planting peren- nials. "June is Perennial Gardening Month. Now is the time to get them," she added.
