The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, February 20, 2013 A-9 Pike Central students have great time in Washington DC By Mike Johansen A chance to see an American President inaugurated and to see some of the most precious historic and cultural sights in the nation came into a reality for a group of students and chaperones from Pike Central High School in the middle of Januaryand they had a great time doing it. Thirty-six Pike Central students and 12 chaperones had the experience of a lifetime, spending two days seeing some of the sights in Washington, D.C., and attending the inauguration of U.S. President Barack Obama. It was a special chance to learn about both American History and what is happening at the moment. The students and chaperones left the Friday before the inauguration to head to Washington, D.C. through a private tour company, paying for the trip with their own funds. The only thing that the Pike County School Corporation did is let them out of school for the trip. None of the students had been to an inauguration ceremony before and that made the trip special alone. But, they also got a chance to see some of the special sights in Washington, D.C. The chaperones included Mr. and Mrs. Chris Hadley, the organizer of the trip on the local level; Mr. and Mrs. Jarrod Gideon, Mr. and Mrs. Randy Meece, Cynthia Pancake, Charles Foster, Nicole Brittain, Susan Kizoff, Karla Seilhymer and Paula McCarter. Students making the trip to DC include: Kenna Longabaugh, Alyssa Jones, Sara DEsposito, Hannah McCarter, Kayanna Malone, Cara Hill, Megan Seilhymer, Cara Hill, Kyndall Coleman, Erica Iafrate, Sam Baumgart, Zach Thomas, Dylon Brittain, Sheldon Kempf, Logan Boyd, Kirsten Gladdish, Janessa Foster, Samantha Satterfield, Mala- na Recker, Haylea Harden, Becca Lee, Tanner Brooks, Tanner Gray, Jeffrey Estey, Jacob Western, Luke Wilson, Chase Nordoff, River Mosby, Daniel Falls, Kyle Indorf, Clay Hills, Austin Hannebutt, Justin Stieneker, Michael Pennington, Dakota Pancake and Randy Kendall. T he trip was t aken through Worldstrides Discover Now tour company. They provide transportation and course leaders-guides. The students making the trip loved it. The trip to Washington, D.C. was a really fun and educational experience for our group of students and adults. We saw so many different memorials including the Lincoln Memorial, Iwo Jima Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery and the FDR Memorial. The group visited many sights in D.C. while also attending the inauguration ceremonies as part of a crowd of thousands. The crowds in the plaza that was the sight of the Presidential Inauguration was a very crowded place and the ceremonies were in huge screens. known soldier at Arlington Cemetery. As a student, my two favorite activities were seeing the changing of the guard and the Pentagon. The inauguration was also a prestigious part of history we had taken part in. Witnessing the security there and throughout the city was very curious and exciting; and I think this trip was a great opportunity for us students to be privileged with. Sara DEsposito. I had the experience of a lifetime when we went to Washington, D.C. We toured multiple monuments, museums and even attended the inauguration. I learned so much from our great tour guide. It was interesting to learn how and why things were built. Arlington Cemetery was my favorite. Seeing all of the people who gave up their lives for us was moving. Arlington isnt even half the number of brave soldiers lost, yet you can look and see nothing but white gravestones for miles. This was a great experience. I recommend it. Hannah McCarter. Over my four days in Washington, D.C. I learned a lot about the history of our country. Not only was it a good experience, it also opened my eyes to the real world. I had never been to a big city before and from living in Pike County all of my life, I had never had the big city experience. If anyone asked me what my favorite thing about D.C. was, I would probably tell them it was Arlington National Cemetery. Watching the Changing of the Guard was really touching. I debated on going when all the planning was going on last year and Im really glad I did. It was a great experience and I advise everyone to go if they get the chance. I would like to thank Mr. Hadley for putting it together and everyone else that went for making it a great trip!Kyndall Coleman. Saturday they went to the Jefferson Memorial, FDR Memorial and the World War II Museum. They saw the Washington Monument, but did not get to go up it since it is under repair. They also visited the Holocaust Museum. Saturday afternoon they went to the White House for a picture stop and then on to Fords Theatre for a tour. Sunday morning, the group visited A rlington National Cemetery including the Kennedy Gravesite, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and saw the Changing of the Guard. They also visited the Iwo Jima Marine Memorial. The afternoon was spent at the Smithsonian Museum Complex including the Museum of American History, Natural History Museum, National Art Gallery and Air and Space Museum. The group visited the Lincoln Memorial, Korean Memorial and Vietnam Memorial. Monday was the inauguration and they were dropped off for a long day at the ceremonies with Pre-Inaugural music at 10:30 a.m. followed by the swearing-in ceremonies at 11:30 a.m. for the vice-president and president. The inaugural parade began at 2 p.m. on Pennsylvania Avenue. They traveled all day Tuesday and were back in their own beds in Pike County Tuesday evening. The Indiana memorial at the Arlington National Cemetery drew the attention of the Indiana delegation. Looking for Convenient Specialty Care?
