A-8 Wednesday, February 20, 2013 The Press-Dispatch Guys and Dolls musical coming In March By Mike Johansen The 1950s award winning musical Guys and Dolls is coming to the Pike Central High School stage March 15 and 17 and it will delight the crowds with some great musical numbers and a good story. Guys and Dolls has music and lyrics by Frank Loesser. It is based on The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown and Blood Pressure, two short stories by Damon Runyon, and also borrows characters and plot elements from other Runyon storiesmost notably Pick the Winner. The story starts with all the hot gamblers in town, and theyre all depending on Nathan Detroit to set up this weeks incarnation of The Oldest Established Permanent Floating Crap Game in New York. The only problem is, he needs $1,000 to get the place. Throw in Sarah Brown, whos short on sinners at the mission she runs; Sky Masterson, who accepts Nathans $1,000 bet that he cant get Sarah Brown to go with him to Havana; Miss Adelaide, who wants Nathan to marry her; Police Lieutenant Brannigan, who always seems to appear at the wrong time. Throw in the music/lyr- ics of Frank Loesser, and youve got quite a musical. It includes the songs: Fugue for Tinhorns, Luck Be a Lady, and Sit Down, Youre Rocking the Boat. The musical premiered on Broadway at the 46th Street Theatre on November 24, 1950. It ran for 1,200 performances and won the Tony Award for Best Musical. The musical has had several Broadway and London revivals, as well as a 1955 film adaptation starring Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons, Frank Sinatra and Vivian Blaine. The performance dates are Friday, March 15, at 7:30 and Sunday, March 17, at 2:30. Tickets are $8 and can be ordered from any cast member or by calling 354-8911.
