B-6 Wednesday, January 9, 2013 The Press-Dispatch What's new at your library? By Ginger Rogers It's a new year, starting out with new year resolutions, new beginnings and high hopes for a better year. But just as resolutions spring from a desire to make something better than it was in the past, new beginnings of necessity follow on the coat tails of endings and good-byes. Three years is just long enough to start to feel at home in a new town and at a new job, I think. It's just long enough to feel comfortable with the folks at the post office, the newspaper staff, the folks at the bank and the gas stations, with the local real estate agents, the mayor and his staff, the Chamber of Commerce and Pike County Community Foundation, the insurance agents, the Pike County Arts commission, so many nice teachers, principals, school librarians, other school staff, the ladies of the Garden Club, Val Fleig and the ladies in his office, Katie at the coop, the folks at Mi Patio, and the China Wok. When I call in an order to the Smokehouse, they say "okay, Ginger," before I ever say who I am. I like that. I like this town, this county. Three years is just long enough to feel like I've really made long-lasting friendships among some of you, and especially of the library staff and board. It's long enough to get your heart involved, knowing that you matter to the people you work with and they to you. We worry over each other, pray for each other and advise each other. This has been a good place to work. A lot has been accomplished in these three years. This beautiful new library facility we're in, with three times as many computers, Wi-Fi, e-books, fiber optic connections and other improvements in the technology on hand, new programs like the Mother Goose on the Loose program and all kinds of new programs that are being tried out and added all the time. We have so much more space and such an attractive facility now. Computer use, number of library cards issued, number of materials checked out and number of students taking online classes with library staff as proctors has just multiplied beyond every hope we had when we opened this building. I'm so proud to have been a part of all of this. By the time this article appears in the Press-Dispatch, I will have worked my last day and attended the last board meeting of the Pike County Public Library. It's the ending that comes before a new beginning. I appreciate you allowing me to serve you here, thank you for all the help and support this community has given to the library. I'm so glad that there are so many of you who believe in the purpose and the impor- House For sale tance of the library to this community. Lives are influenced, enriched, changed here for the better. A happy new year, God bless and I wish a bright future to you all. Here are the activities taking place at the library this week: Preschool class at Winslow is today from 9-10:30.
