The Press-Dispatch Tough week for Lady Chargers Lose to two teams, one in PAC play By Mike Johansen The start to the second half of the season did not start the way the Pike Central Lady Chargers wanted, especially on defense. The Lady Chargers scored 91 points, which is good, but gave up 139 points in losses to the Washington Lady Hatchets and Forest Park Lady Rangers in games on Thursday and Saturday. The Lady Chargers did not find their scoring touch until the second quarter at Washington last Thursday, and by then is was a little late as they lost a 67-43 game to the Lady Hatchets. The Lady Chargers had only one point in the first quarter and 10 points in the second. They were down 15-1 at the end of the first period and gave up an additional 16 points the second frame and trailed 31-11 at halftime. They scored more in the third period, but the defense was no better. They were out gunned 19-14 in the third frame to trail 50-25 going into the final period. Pike Central had an 18-17 edge in the period. At least the scoring was better in that final period. Coach Randy Graham said they can't continue to start slow and remain in games very long. They made only 28.2 percent of their shots and were 13 of 17 from the free throw line, 76.4 percent. They committed a season high 23 fouls allowing Washington to make 23 of 32 free throws. Emily Howes had her best game of the season scoring 19 points with four three pointers and five of six free throw tries. She was the only Lady Chargers in double figures. Jordan Like had 10 rebounds, Michal Ashby five and three each for Olivia Leighty and Howes. Ashby had three steals. The Lady Chargers were without starting guard Alyx Abbott. She suffered a con- Emily Howes moves inside for a short shot against Forest Park on Saturday in a PAC game at home. cussion in the first game of the Vincennes Rivet tournament and is out through the end of this week at least. That hurt both the varsity and JV as they had to adjust JV playing time to have some back-up for the varsity games. They play at Jasper on Thursday starting with the JV at 6 p.m. and the varsity at 7:30. Saturday they host the North Posey Lady Vikings starting at noon for the JV and 1:30 p.m. for the varsity. The Lady Chargers got off to a much better start in scoring at home Saturday afternoon, but they could Lady Chargers JV comes up short By Mike Johansen The week was a tough one for the Pike Central Lady Chargers JV girls basketball team with losses to Washington on Thursday and Forest Park on Saturday. The Lady Chargers lost to Washington in the opener by a 32-25 score. Lindsey Catt had 10 points, Rachel Roettger 9, Alcia Hanselman 2 and Nicah McFarland 4. The Lady Chargers were at home Saturday and gave up too many points early in the game and lost to the Forest Park Lady Rangers JV 37-22. The Lady Chargers tied the game at 2-2 on a shot by Rachel Roettger and went ahead 4-2 on a basket by Lindsey Catt. The Lady Rangers scored the next eight points to lead 10-4. A basket by Cheyanna Padgett cut the gap by two. The Lady Rangers scored a basket, but Catt had the final two pointer for PC to leave the Lady Chargers four behind, 8-12. The Lady Rangers scored the first three points of the second period. Roettger answered with a basket and a free throw for an 11-15 score. The Lady Rangers out scored PC 6-1 the rest of the first half to lead 21-12 at the half. Roettger made two free throws to start the final period and Catt had a basket to keep PC within seven. The Lady Rangers had a 9-6 edge in the period as only another basket by Catt kept them from getting further away. After a Lady Rangers basket Lindsey Nixon put in a shot and Kirstin Asbell made one with 4:50 on the clock. That was the final basket for PC as the Lady Rangers scored the final five points to win by 15. Catt scored 8 points, Roettger 8, Asbell 2, Nixon 2 and Padgett 2. Catt had eight rebounds and two each for Alicia Hanselman and Nixon. McFarland had four steals and Nixon two. "We are improving, but need to get better on defense. We simply have to stop people," said Coach Tim Crow. not come up with a way to stop the hot shooting Forest Park Lady Rangers falling by a 72-48 score. The Lady Chargers are 3-10 on the season and 1-4 in the Pocket Athletic Conference. "A bright spot for us was that we didn't do a bad job of turning the ball over. The bad thing is our transition defense was not very good and we did not contest shots or rebound like we are capable of doing," said Coach Randy Graham. The Lady Chargers were right with the Lady Rangers through much of the first quarter and led through the first three plus minutes. The Lady Rangers started the scoring just 12 seconds into the game. Emily Howes started the Lady Chargers scoring with a three pointer swishing through the net at the 7:35 mark after the Lady Rangers missed their next shot and Jordan Like rebounded. Howes tried another shot from about 12 feet away, missed, but she was fouled and made both free throws for a 5-2 edge at the 7:02 mark of the opening period. The Lady Rangers had two more shots, missing on both. PC missed one shot, but came back after the second Forest Park miss and Jordan Like drove the ball inside for two and a 7-2 edge with 5:43 on the clock. The Lady Rangers made their first run of the game and went from down five to leading 9-7 on a three by Ashley Reckelhoff. Olivia Leighty made a free throw to come within one. After another Lady Rangers basket, Michal Ashby put in a jump shot for a 10-11 score. The Lady Rangers came back with two baskets for a 15-10 margin. Another basket by Ashby cut that deficit and a basket by Leighty had PC within one again, 14-15. The Lady Rangers went to work again scoring the next six points and eight of the final 10 points in the quarter. Only a basket by Leighty broke the run up a bit. The Lady Rangers led 23-16 at the quarter break. They also scored the first basket of the second period to lead by nine. Like slipped in a two, but the Lady Rangers hit a three by Amanda Jacob for a 10 point lead. Like hit a two and made one of two free throws to cut into the margin. After another Lady Rangers three, Howes nailed a shot off a feed from Leighty for a 26-31 count. After another visitors score, Howes hit another three for a four point difference, 29-33. The Lady Rangers scored the final six points of the first half to lead 39-29 at the break. The Lady Rangers picked up where they left off to start the third period scoring the first eight points for a 47-29 edge. Ashby broke the run with a three, but the Lady Rangers countered with a three. Howes made one free throw. The Lady Rangers went on another run to pull ahead 55-33. A three and a two by Ashby and a three from Howes kept the difference at 20 points at the end of the third quarter, 41-61. The Lady Rangers led by as many as 24 points in the final period as the reserves saw much of the playing time for both sides. Kylie Blessinger led all scorers and the Lady Rangers with 22 points, Lydia Lange added 14 and Ashley Reckelhoff 13. Forest Park shot 73.4 percent from the field in the first three quarters and finished the game at 52.7 percent. Emily Howes led the Lady Chargers with 17 points, Michal Ashby 12 and Jordan Like 11. Like had eight rebounds, Ashby five, Howes three and Samantha Halbrader three. Like had two assists, Ashby three, Leighty two, Howes two and Halbrader two. Ashby had four steals.
