The FREEMAN DECEMBER 2012 & ENTERPRISE SPORTS PERFECTION SECTION B STATE FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK Arrowhead youth served well By Daniel Mike Warhawks unbeaten in state title run Freeman Staff By Daniel Mike Freeman Staff MADISON Greg Malling was walking off the field at Camp Randall with a large smile across his face and a golden football trophy in his hands. He was receiving countless hugs and congratulations from friends, family, players, students and anyone else the Arrowhead High School football coach was near. But Malling was admittedly disappointed about one thing after his teams 35-14 victory over Sun Prairie in the WIAA Division 1 state championship game last month. The fun part is all the practices, all the time in the weight room, watching those guys grow, Malling said. Frankly, this is kind of sad because its over. The (gold) ball is nice, but I enjoyed the season. There was a lot to enjoy for the Warhawks. They finished 13-0 and won their first state title since 2007 and fourth overall. It was a dominating season in which they won every game by 20 or more points. I thought we might lose a couple games, senior center Eric Precia said. I thought wed be OK, but I just cant believe this. This season turned out perfectly My senior year, I could. nt ask for anything more. Arrowhead displayed why it had steamrolled through the season in taking a 35-0 halftime lead. Junior Ricky Finco caught a 33-yard touchdown pass from senior Brady Kelliher, senior Brandon Kim caught a 3-yard touchdown pass from senior Dom Todarello, senior Steve Inside Malling picked Coach of Year...........2B Mary Langenfeld/Special to The Freeman Arrowheads Dom Todarello carries the ball during the WIAA Division 1 state title game against Sun Prairie at Camp Randall. Radeztsky caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Kelliher, Kelliher ran in an 11-yard score and senior Kenny Finco caught a 37-yard touchdown pass from Kelliher. We knew we could beat these guys, Todarello said. Its been a hell of a year. It kind of came as a surprise how much we dominated. Arrowhead outgained Sun Prairie 390 yards to 241. The Warhawks tied a Division 1 state title game record with 35 points in a half and set a record with their 28 secondquarter points. Kelliher threw for 222 yards, and adding Todarellos 3 yards, the Warhawks passed for 225 total yards, another Division 1 record. Their 16 completions were a Division 1 record. Kelliher tied Division 1 individual records with his 15 completions and three touchdown passes, and Todarello tied an individual record with his five receptions. We knew we had to pick it up, and we did a great job responding, Kelliher said. We had a little bit of nerves at the beginning, but everyone on the line and the sideline told me to calm down. Kelliher did that, thanks in part to some short swing passes and bubble screens that helped him adjust after missing a few passes by a couple of inches each time. I can get into a rhythm really quick that way, Kelliher said of the quick-hitting passes. Email: dmike@conleynet.com MADISON Billy Hirschfeld is ready to get back on a football field. Not too long after the Arrowhead High School football team beat Sun Prairie 3514 in the WIAA Division 1 state title game, Hirschfeld was already imagining 2013. We were saying on the sideline, Were going to be able to do this again, Hirschfeld said, I certainly hope so. Hirschfeld was an all-state defensive lineman for this years team and had 2 1/2 tackles for a loss against Sun Prairie. He wasnt the only underclassman who left quite a mark on the state championship. Junior Sam Seonbuchner led Arrowhead with five tackles, intercepted a pass and blocked a punt. Junior Matt Seitz, who led Arrowhead in tackles this season, had four. Sophomore Andy Hessler had four tackles and a sack, junior Alex Romenesko had four tackles, junior Logan Rupard had three tackles and 1 1/2 sacks and junior Jake Miller had three tackles. From the beginning of August, we worked our butts off, Hirschfeld said. To now be undefeated state champs, thats all you can ask for. The offense also was bolstered by several younger players. Freshman Ben Bredeson is Arrowheads left tackle, while juniors Gabe Morris and George Panos are the Arrowhead guards. Junior Ricky Finco has been the teams leading receiver all season, and he had two catches for 47 yards including a 33-yard touchdown. We keep adjusting every day and the coaches are , always finding stuff for us to fix, Hirschfeld said. We listen, we do our jobs. It was just an amazing job by the coaching staff. Mary Langenfeld/Special to The Freeman Arrowhead players hold up the WIAA Division 1 state championship trophy. Arrowhead possesses a very talented receiving corps. Throwing for 225 yards in the victory over Sun Prairie, the Warhawks receivers were able to display that skill. But coach Greg Malling is impressed with another aspect of the group. Not only are they physically gifted, but they are mentally gifted, Malling said. Well call plays wrong, and theyll make them right. This week, we were yelling in a play they couldnt run and they fixed it for me. Theyre so smart, its unbelievable. Senior Dom Todarello led the group with five catches for 75 yards, senior Brandon Kim had four catches for 26 yards and a score, senior Kenny Finco two catches for 52 yards and a score, junior Ricky Finco two catches for 47 yards and a score and senior Steve Radeztsky had a 10-yard touchdown catch. Smart in high school is everything. Its above physical skill, Malling said. Being smart and being selfless is it. Theyve got it. Arrowhead has been to the Division 1 state title game 10 times since 1993. Any student whos been through the school since 1993 has been able to see the team play in Camp Randall, as the school has spaced out their state appearances: 1993, 1994, 1996, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2012. Thats pretty remarkable, Malling said. This years title was the schools fifth, with the Warhawks also winning in 1993, 1994, 1996 and 2007. With his team leading 35-0 at halftime, Malling attempted to get as many players as he could onto the Camp Randall field. Throughout the second half, Malling substituted at least two players per play a , move that saw players constantly sprint to or from the sideline. Malling even took a timeout in the fourth quarter and lined his seniors on the field to allow the large Arrowhead crowd a chance to salute them in their final game.
