SPORTS DECEMBER 2012 STATE GIRLS SWIMMING FREEMAN & ENTERPRISE LAKE COUNTRY Page 3B STATE BOYS SOCCER Warhawks second again Hilltoppers stand in Lasers way again Arrowhead six points from title By Mark Hutchinson By Mark Hutchinson Freeman Staff Freeman Staff MADISON They did it again. Classic 8 Conference girls swimming rivals Waukesha South/Mukwonago and Arrowhead engaged in a fight to the finish for the second season in a row in the WIAA Division 1 state meet, and for the second consecutive time, the Warhawks came home as runners-up. Arrowhead held a 249-239 lead over Waukesha South/Mukwonago entering the meets final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, at the University of Wisconsin Natatorium on Nov. 10. Junior Abby Jagdfeld, sophomore Molly Manchon, freshman Alicia Beam and junior Kaersten Meitz won the race in 3 minutes, 25.38 seconds to catapult South/Mukwonago over Arrowhead to its second consecutive state title. The Blackshirts totaled 279 points to 273 for the Warhawks, who had won three consecutive state championships prior to last season. Arrowhead, which needed to finish at least fourth in the last event to win the meet, placed seventh, with freshman Kelly Jacob, senior Katie Duranso, sophomore Lindsay Adamski and sophomore Maddie Barta finishing in 3:33.69. We had every confidence in the girls we put in that relay that they could do it, Arrowhead coach Jennifer Pollnow said. Its tough to overcome being seeded eighth, but we got a best time, so I was really proud of them. South/Mukwonago coach Blaine Carlson was relieved afterward. We could tell it was going down to the wire again, Carlson said. Arrowhead did a great job, and our top girls really had some great swims also. I had to shuffle our MILWAUKEE The Hilltoppers reached the peak for a third straight season, but Kettle Moraine made their latest climb difficult. Marquette High School won its third consecutive WIAA Division 1 state boys soccer championship and its ninth in 13 seasons last month, rallying for a 2-1 victory over the Lasers in a rematch of the 2011 title match at Uihlein Soccer Park. The Lasers knocked the top-ranked Hilltoppers back on their heels and left Marquettes fans stunned when they mounted a 1-0 lead just 42 seconds into the match on a goal by junior halfback Andy Chmielewski. The score gave Kettle Moraine an enormous confidence boost. I think we all had it in the back of our head that if we put one in early wed have the , upper hand because we were the underdogs going in, KM senior defender Kevin Winter said. It was just such a shock to see the ball go in. It was unbelievable ... exhilirating. KM coach Greg Prospero sensed the confidence in his players. Were a defensive team, Prospero said. Thats our identity When we went up 1. 0, we absolutely thought we could hold them out. I have a lot of confidence in our guys in back, especially our senior leadership Tony (Covelli), Kevin (Winter) and Kyle (Ihn) in the goal. We got what we hoped for with that early opportunity . Kettle Moraine made its lead stand up by displaying its trademark defense and getting several spectacular saves from Kyle Ihn in goal. Marquettes experience up top is really hard to match, Winter said. Theyre sophisticated and they work together really well. Prospero wasnt surprised at the play of Ihn, who minded the net in 13 shutouts and yielded just 15 goals this season. Kyle had to sit last year Mary Langenfeld/Special to The Freeman Arrowheads Lindsay Adamski swims the 100-yard breaststroke at the WIAA Division 1 state girls swim meet last month. relays around a little bit. I wanted to make sure we had enough on the back end of the 400 free relay in case it did come down to the end, so we lost a couple of places in the 200 free relay. But if we hadnt made that switch, it wouldnt have happened for us. A team effort by Arrowhead pushed South/Mukwonago to the limit. We were seeded 57-point underdogs to South going into this meet, Pollnow said. We made up 51 of those points, which is incredible. So I couldnt be any prouder of these girls. They gave it their all and were in it until the very end. If you had looked at it on paper, people could have counted us out right away. The Warhawks got off to a soaring start as senior Taylor Teske, Adamski, senior Miranda Helbig and junior Mary Warren won the 200 medley relay in 1:44.44. Arrowhead got a championship performance from Jacob, Barta, Duranso and Warren in the 200 free relay (1:35.35) and another from Adamski in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.98). Also climbing the podium for the Warhawks were Warren, third in the 100 free (51.90); Helbig, fourth in the 100 butterfly (57.14); Barta, fourth in the 100 backstroke (57.29); Jacob, fifth in the 100 free (52.46); and freshman Megan Doty, sixth in the 100 butterfly (57.71). At the beginning of the season, we said we could win a state title, Adamski said. We didnt win, but Im so happy for my team. We did great. Warren put the Warhawks performance in perspective. We made up a lot of points, she said. I couldnt be more proud of our girls. We did better than we ever thought we could. Its a heartbreak to get second again, by six points this time, but were together. Were OK. One of Waukesha South/Mukwonagos state champions, amid her teams celebration, credited Arrowhead for its valiant effort. We proved everyone wrong who said we couldnt do it again, Meitz said. Im just really proud of my team. What happened here also shows that Arrowhead is a really good team. We really had to fight to beat them. That makes it all the more rewarding. Pewaukee finished 19th with 30 points in the WIAA Division 2 state meet Nov. 9 at the Natatorium. The Pirates were led by senior Claire Fernandez, who placed seventh in the 500 freestyle in 5:16.83 and eighth in the 200 individual medley in 2:13.69; and junior Liz Leist, who came in 12th in the 50 free in 25.27 and 15th in the 100 backstroke in 1:02.96. Pirates outsted in D2 semis By Tony Mooren Freeman Correspondent MILWAUKEE Beating the defending state champion twice in the season was a tough proposition. Pewaukee High Schools boys soccer team, a winner over reigning Division 2 state champion Mount Horeb in the third game of the season, was ousted 2-1 by the Vikings in a WIAA state tournament semifinal game at Uihlein Soccer Park. The two goals tied the highest total allowed by Pewaukee this season and had not happened in the previous 13 games. The Pirates advanced to the state tournament by outscoring four regional and sectional opponents by a combined score of 17-1. But Mount Horeb senior goalie Colin Schulz recorded eight saves to deny Pewaukee its first victory in two state tournament appearances. it more playing (this year). But when we lost Mack to graduation ... he was probably the one who pushed me the most at practice and probably my closest friend on the team. It was difficult, but I feel like I took over the role he played for me in helping our younger players. Marquette senior Mike Wabiszewski scored to forge a 1-1 tie at 31:01. The stalemate continued until Marquette senior Jacob Grindel scored at 63:38. behind a really good goalkeeper in Mack Wheeler, Prospero said. He stepped up this year when it was his turn. All year long, hes made progress as an individual. Hes made progress as a player. His communication and direction back there, you dont see that very often from a young man whos 18 years old. Ihn said he enjoyed his return visit to the state tournament from a different perspective. It was a little weird watching from the sideline last year, Ihn said. I liked Email: mhutchinson@conleynet.com ONE WEEK ONLY!
