Owners Jim and Nancy Albrecht and their daughter, store President Michelle Harrington, have the freedom in their upscale, 62,000-square-feet Sentry store to go beyond a corporate formula and carry interesting Wisconsin-made items, as well as the standard mainline groceries. The eclectic mix provides a point of difference in an increasingly competitive grocery landscape. The Food Marketing Institute, in Arlington, Va., reports more than 150 million square feet of new grocery store space nationally in the last five years, mostly at dollar stores, supercenters, drugstores, discounters and fresh specialists. Everyone is selling groceries, says Jim Albrecht. Wisconsin-made products have been part of the mix since Albrechts opened in 1994, but as the buy-local trend has garnered attention nationwide, Albrechts focus on Wisconsin goods has intensified in the past two years, says Jim Albrecht. The list of Wisconsin vendors now numbers in the hundreds.
