DEADLINES ARE TUESDAY (2pm) FOR THE UPCOMING WEEKEND PAPER. 257706015 Post Staff MILWAUKEE — Transportation indus- try veteran Brian Dranzik this week became the permanent director for General Mitchell International Airport. He replaces Ismael "Izzy" Bonilla, who was fired Sept. 14 over allegations of prefer- ential treatment for former co-workers. The Milwaukee County Board of Ethics has been investigating the allega- tions, which County Executive Chris Abele learned about in late August. "I'm incredibly proud of everything we've accomplished at MKE over the past couple of years and am honored that County Executive Abele has entrusted me with the important task of making sure this growth is only the beginning," Dranzik said in a news release. Dranzik, the county's director of trans- portation since 2012, has been the airport's interim director since Bonilla's dismissal. Dranzik was also the interim director for nine months in 2015-'16. The county executive's office said Dranzik then oversaw the completion of Mitchell's $40 million baggage claim remod- eling project, welcomed new air services such as Alaska Airline and played a key role in the airport's long-term planning process. "Brian Dranzik has been a source of sta- bility, leadership, and innovation in various capacities at the airport for 14 years, which makes him the obvious choice to oversee MKE's ongoing growth and success," Abele said in a news release. Over the last year, principally during Bonilla's tenure, the airport added 12 non- stop routes for a total of 49 nonstop destina- tions, expanded international travel into Guadalajara, Mexico, and drew more pas- sengers every month. Last month, Abele announced his 2018 budget proposal would include more than $25 million in revenue bonds and airport funds to begin design and engineering work for a new international terminal at no added cost to taxpayers, which can be expanded Dranzik permanently replaces fired airport director See AIRPORT on Page 15 Dranzik
