How should parents handle a bad report card? Sound Off/ Sarah Herrera Not everyone knows that our Bluffer class here at Red Bluff High School has gone back as far as the 1900's. So yes, that means we have high school newspapers that date that far back. One throwback news story is 'The class of "27,"'which reads, "The senior class of 1927 is the largest in all the history of Red Bluff High. There are about 75 enrolled in it now. About two weeks ago, at class meeting, their officers were chosen. These are: Jack Howell, president; Russell Cotter, vice president; Juanita Windham, secretary; Victor Ginelli, senior representative to student council; and Darrell Conrad, yell leader. New advisors were also chosen, as neither of their former ones are here this year. The seniors were very much pleased and honored when Miss Murdock and Mr. Hartzell accepted this responsibility. The class has already demonstrated its extraordinary "pep," by challenging the other classes to a yelling contest to be held sometime in the near future." Unfortunately all of the stories in the Bluffer from that time were anonymous. The stories were also extremely shorter. Looking back at Bluffer memories are really interesting, if you actually read and look through the newspapers. Red Bluff High actually used to have a Junior prom, and in the same year of 1927 the Junior prom was the last dance of the year to which all classes were invited. Red Bluff has sure changed since the year '27', and I wonder how much change we'll see in twenty more years. If you are wanting to look more into old newspapers from Red Bluff High, you can have a talk with our secretary Mrs.Clawson in the library. AVID, a life changing opportunity that stands for Achievement Via Individual Determination. AVID began in the year 1980 at Claremont High School with a teacher named Mary Catherine Swanson. For years, this class helped students prepare themselves mentally, emotionally, and academically to prosper in a stressful college based environment. However, this beneficial class isn't offered to everyone, there's an a p p l i c a t i o n p r o c e s s , choosing the best students to take the course. AVID came back to Red Bluff High School in 2013 — 2017 being the first g r a d u a t i n g class since 2010 — and it's students want to give back to the student body. Every student can benefit from the sources and opportunities given to AVID community. AVID Club is to be run by 3 to 4 year AVID students in order to successfully create an impact on students lives. AVID Club is meant to demonstrate dedication to academics and support to their peers. A key objective in the support AVID Club offers is to help first generation college kids grasp the concept of applying to college, the requirements needed and how to create an image of greatness for your applications even better. When asked how does AVID Club help students prosper, Chairman Priscilla Torres stated, "It gives children a purpose to academically better themselves, and be on a road to a bright future." AVID Club touches base with all the aspects present in everyday college life such taking flawless notes that would benefit the student; how to manage time between class, work and social life; learning how to fill out applications for scholarships, a w o r k p l a c e , r e s u m e s , and even i n t e r v i e w skills, there's a week where mock i n t e r v i e w s are held with its students. AVID is a Club that helps its students and community. Community Service is one of the many opportunities provided by AVID Club. They've helped with book drives and people in need out in the community. When asked how it has affected her, AVID Club member Martha Cruz stated, "This wonderful club has made me want to strive for success, has given me purpose instead of simply going through the motions." AVID Club is something that everyone could benefit from. AVID builds on college greatness "Every student can benefit from the sources and opportunities given to AVID community." As most students know, with football season comes something us girls like to call homecoming season. The homecoming games on September 30 will be split by a coronation between the junior varsity and varsity football games on Friday. The nominated queens will be walked onto the field by their fathers for the coronation. As they reach the middle of the field, they also can give a prepared speech. Most don't usually do this and instead two announcers will go out to the field with the queens and proceed to talk about their interests and why they believe they were nominated. When one of the queen nominees, Abby O'Sullivan, was asked what they were most excited for about the upcoming homecoming events, she said "I'm excited to get close to the other nominees because they are all incredibly sweet. I'm also very honored to be nominated, and thankful that I have such great peers. I'm really happy that people think I would be a good decision to hopefully be this years 2016-2017 homecoming queen!" The week of homecoming will have lunchtime activities going on all five days. The queens will host them and make sure that we all have a great time. I believe they still do the game where people actually get to bid on a queen to go to lunch or dinner with each other. Monday the 26 will kick off the week with a rally for each nominee to do their skit. Their skits are usually performed in the Performing Arts Center (PAC). At home, each nominee works on what they want to do and chose some people to help them whether its their friends, sister, or even teacher. Usually our nomonies do dances, some do themes from either popular books or movies, and you can even do stand up comedy if thats your thing! Rosy Alfaro was asked about what she was looking forward to most in homecoming week and her response was, "Getting down at the dance and wearing my crown, I also think it will be an exciting experience to actually be voted homecoming queen or even seeing one of my friends win homecoming queen." There's another rally Friday the 30th for the nominees to get escorted by the teacher of their choice. This rally will be located in the large gymnasium by the main office and lasts usually about an hour or half an hour. The whole week of homecoming, there will be dress up days to show off your spirit, and just for basic fun entertainment! Student's besides the queens have to celebrate too! When Hunter Hutchens was asked about what she was most excited about for homecoming week, she said, "I'm excited for the dress up days, and the skits. I'm excited to show my homecoming queen spirit!" Last year of 2014-2015 here at Red Bluff High School was the first time that we started to elect homecoming princesses. Some people like the new rules, some people don't. The Freshman, Sophomore and Junior princess were also nominated by their classmates so they got the honor to be elected by their student body. Princesses, however, don't have a skit, but they still attend the kick off rally and show their spirit. They are recognized a little bit less than the queens for obvious reasons, but they are still recognized entirely throughout the whole "homecoming season." Homecoming crosses over a few seasons, and creates a lot of events here at Red Bluff High. Homecoming season is definitely one of our busiest seasons of the year. 2016 Homecoming season arrives in full swing to Red Bluff High School campus Photo Credits/Sophie Cumpton Photo Credits// Britney Miranda Aly Smith Staff Writer Britney Miranda Features Editor
