SOUTH MILWAUKEE — Caterpillar announced earli- er this week that it will close its corporate building in Oak Creek and move between 200 and 250 jobs to South Milwaukee during the first half of 2016, according to a blog post by South Milwaukee Mayor Erik Brooks. He wrote that many of the positions that will be moved are salaried professionals who work in finance, human resources, legal and market- ing and had been working in South Milwaukee prior to the opening of the Oak Creek mining headquarters in the former Midwest Airlines building about five years ago. "The move is not a sur- prise, given Cat's announce- ment last month of up to 10,000 global job cuts and other consolidations coming in light of a continuing slumping mining industry," Brooks wrote. "While it's hard to call this great news — certainly when taking a broader perspective with economic development — it does strengthen Cat's pres- ence in downtown South Milwaukee and should help area businesses." Brooks also said that a Caterpillar spokesman told him that the Surface Mining and Technology group locat- ed in the South Milwaukee facility will focus on rope shovels and draglines in the future. The company also plans to invest in the South Milwaukee facility in the next three years in order to meet eventual demand. www.cat.com October 9, 2015 • Milwaukee County Post • 3 Submitted rendering The future Northwestern Mutual mixed-us building is looking northwest in downtown Milwaukee. "That's why we're creating a destination for future res- idents looking to live, work and play in the heart of an exciting city while provid- ing convenient parking for our growing employee base." Site preparation and demolition will begin in January with construction starting in March, accord- ing to the announcement. The building will be designed with environmen- tal sustainability in mind, and the company expects the project to be completed and occupied by spring 2018. The mixed-use building will include a 25-story resi- dential high-rise with a total of 308 high-end apart- ment units and 16 pent- house units with extensive views of Lake Michigan and downtown. The build- ing will have one-bedroom, two-bedroom and three-bed- room units. Also part of the plans is a plaza at the cor- ner of Mason and Van Buren. There will be ground-floor retail space along Jackson, Mason and Van Buren streets. In addition, an eight- story parking garage with 1,100 parking stalls below the 25 residential stories will be built. Northwestern Mutual will make some spaces available for employ- ees, with the remainder open to the public at market rates and other spaces will be reserved for the build- ing's residents, according to the announcement. The parking structure will fea- ture dedicated space for bicycles and motorcycles, and charging stations for electric cars may also be included. The plans for the build- ing also include a glass exte- rior, a ninth-floor rooftop swimming pool, an outdoor fire pit, an indoor golf sim- ulator and a large fitness center. "Milwaukee is experi- encing a renaissance, and we're proud to be one of a growing number of projects that are a magnet to draw even more talent and busi- nesses to the city," Zale said in the statement. "Our new building will also provide positive economic impact and contribute to the city's tax base." Solomon Cordwell Buenz is designing the project with structural engineer Magnusson Klemencic Associates. Northwestern Mutual is working with development manager Hines to select additional professional services and contractors. w w w. n o r t h we s t e r n - mutual.com Email: kmichalets@conleynet.com Northwestern Mutual: Plans include company, public use continued from Page 1 PACKARD PLAZA MALL 5656 S.
