Post Staff MILWAUKEE — Outside of Milwaukee County, drivers will soon be able to push their speed just a little high- er after Gov. Scott Walker signed a bill allowing the state Department of Transportation to raise speed limits to 70 mph in select places. On Interstate 43 in Ozaukee County, the speed limit will increase from 65 mph from Highway T to Highway 29 north of Green Bay. Signs could be posted next month. That is just north of where motorists transition from 55 mph in Milwaukee County. The placement is to accom- modate potential backups that often occur on the southbound section of the freeway into Milwaukee County, especially the Mequon Road offramp, DOT spokesman Michael Pyritz said. In Waukesha County, on I-94, drivers will be able to travel at 70 mph west of Highway 164. The increased speed limit will be in place on a 57-mile stretch ending at I- 39/90 in Dane County. On I-43, the speed limit will also be increased west of Highway 164 as part of a 54- mile stretch ending at I-39 in Rock County. The increased speed limits will not take effect until a specific highway segment has signs posted at the high- er speed. The department will be increasing the speed limit along 726 miles of rural interstate in Wisconsin. The change will require the installation of 470 new signs. Other sections included in the increase are: I-94 from the Illinois state line to the Milwaukee County line; and Highway 41 at the southern Washington County line to Highway 441 in Winnebago County. DOT Secretary Mark Gottlieb reminded drivers to be alert, slow down and move over as highway crews work to install the signs beginning next month. "The safety of all travelers and roadside workers remains our department's top priority," Gottlieb said. While the legislation allows the department to raise speed limits on rural interstates, it also allows for an increase to 70 mph "along certain multi-lane highways with access limited to inter- changes." The department is still reviewing freeway seg- ments to consider an increase.
