Van Cleave won the 200- yard individual medley in 1 minute, 53.56 seconds in the WIAA Division 2 state meet at the University of Wis- consin Natatorium. It was the fourth state title for Van Cleave, who won the 200 IM and 500 freestyle as a junior and won the 500 free as a sopho- more. Van Cleave was second in the 500 free, finishing in 4:38.91 — nearly a second faster than last year's win- ning time. But Monona Grove fresh- man Ben McDade shaved nine seconds off his sec- tional time to win the 500 free in 4:37.04. Academy sophomore Jonathan Lee was 13th in the 500 freestyle (5:07.68). Monona Grove won the team title in Division 2. In Division 1, junior Con- nor Rumpit of the Brook- field co-op emerged as run- ner-up to Cedarburg senior Nick Plachinski in the 500 freestyle in 4:39.63, placed seventh in the 200 freestyle in 1:44 and competed in the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays. Rumpit's second-place finish in the 500 free marked his first appear- ance on the state medals podium. "I've been doing a lot of training since last year," Rumpit said. "I've been try- ing to get in as much work as I possibly can with dou- bles. My goal was to get to the podium in the 500. "After sectionals, I was the first seed — I was up there with a chance to win it. Obviously, Nick Plachin- ski just took off. That's OK. I can live with that. He's just a great competitor and a great guy. But I think all of my hard training paid off. I made the podium for the first time, so it was def- initely worth it." Rumpit said he benefitted from the presence of sopho- more teammate Ben Atten- berger, who claimed fourth in the 200 individual med- ley in 1:55.22, fifth in the 100 breaststroke in 58.34 and swam on Brookfield's 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays. "He's a great guy and a great guy to train with," Rumpit said of Attenberg- er. "He's always giving his all in practice. Having him there has been great. I think being there in the same lane pushing each other has made a great impact on both of us. He's a great teammate." Attenberger relished his debut on the medal stand and expressed gratitude for having Rumpit as a team- mate as well. "It felt pretty good," Attenberger said. "Last year, I wasn't even in the top 16, so it was great to be able to be up there. "We all have made a lot of improvement. It's been really nice to have Connor as a teammate to have someone to race in practice every day. It kind of kept me going and motivated. I had to be ready to race him every day." Rumpit hopes he can go out on a high note as a senior in 2016. "I'm really keeping my eye on that top spot," he said. "I know I have to work even harder than ever because there are some tough guys out there. "I'm going to keep putting in the work so hopefully I can beat them out next year." Madison Memorial cap- tured its fifth consecutive Division 1 state team title, totaling 350.5 points. Madi- son West finished a distant second with 201. Surge helps Central girls down Falls By Tony Mooren Freeman Correspondent BROOKFIELD — The "something else" for one team turned into something else for the other The Brookfield Central High School girls basketball team, after a poor 1-for-5 shooting start from the field, made 19 of their next 30 shots from the field (63 per- cent) en route to a convinc- ing 55-36 Greater Metro Con- ference victory over a young Menomonee Falls team that starts one freshman and three sophomores. "We were having trouble with our help defense, so we went with a zone to try some- thing else," Falls coach Craig Amundson said. Much of Central's damage against the zone came in the third quarter when Central, after missing its first three shots, made nine of its next 10 — including three 3-point- ers. Central had a 26-4 scoring binge that took the Lancers from a 24-21 lead to a 50-25 advantage. "I don't know about the end of the first half, but at halftime coach emphasized stepping it up," said Central senior Emma Brauer, who scored 15 points and collect- ed a game-high seven rebounds. "(Coach Mallory Liebl) said, 'OK teams are kind of stagnant, but good teams improve,' so we played with more intensity. "It helped that they ran that zone, because we were able to drive into the gaps, kick the ball out and hit the open shots." Caroline Busch scored 12 of her game-high 19 points during the run, and Brauer scored all nine of her points. Busch made all five of her shots, including two 3-pointers and two layups off steals, while Brauer was 3 for 5 with one 3 and she was 2 for 2 from the free-throw line. "It was one of Emma's bet- ter games," Liebl said. "She's starting to play with more confidence, and she's becom- ing more comfortable com- ing off her injury." Brauer suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament last March and had surgery in April, which has slowed her a little. "I'm always looking to get offensive rebounds — and now defensive rebounds, too, since I'm guarding post play- ers a little more now because I'm a little slower against guards," she said. Central finished with a 30- 25 rebounding edge with Busch chipping in six. The rebounds were a defi- nite factor, especially in the third quarter when Central was making its shots and was limiting Falls to only one shot. "We did a good job adjust- ing to their zone and find- ing some open shots," Liebl said. "We hit a couple, and that kind of boosted our confidence a little." Still, the game was close for the first 16 minutes, 40 seconds at 24-21. But the Indians missed nine of their next 10 shots from the field and committed four turnovers. "What happened was the turnovers ended up layups at their end, so it was like four- or five-point swings," Amundson said. "A turnover is one thing, but how much they made us pay for them was another. We fight hard and fight hard, but we just can't get over the hump." Save some coin... GET 13 WEEKS FOR $30.00! *New Subscribers Only!
